- Ensure all wiring connections are secure and properly insulated.
- This thermostat is designed for use with electric resistance heating systems only.
3. Package Contents
- King Electric ESP230-R Thermostat
- Mounting Screws
- User Manual
4. Installation
Tools Required: Phillips screwdriver, voltage tester.
- Disconnect Power: Turn off power to the heating system at the main circuit breaker before beginning installation.
- Remove Old Thermostat: Carefully remove your existing thermostat from the wall. Note the wiring connections.
- Wiring: This thermostat requires a 3-wire installation. Connect the line voltage wires and the load wires to the appropriate terminals on the ESP230-R thermostat. Refer to the wiring diagram provided with the physical product for specific connections. Ensure all connections are tight.
- Mounting: Secure the ESP230-R thermostat to the wall electrical box using the provided mounting screws. Ensure it is level and flush with the wall.
- Restore Power: Once installation is complete and all connections are secure, restore power at the main circuit breaker.
Note: The thermostat's internal sensor can be affected by drafts from the wall box or direct heat sources. Ensure the wall box is sealed to prevent cold air infiltration, and avoid installing the thermostat near windows, doors, or heat-emitting appliances.
5. Setup
Upon initial power-up, the thermostat will display default settings. You will need to configure the time, day, and desired temperature unit.

Image 1: Front view of the King Electric ESP230-R thermostat, showing the digital display with time, set temperature, and room temperature, along with the up/down adjustment buttons.
5.1 Setting Time and Day
Lift the front cover of the thermostat to access the programming buttons. Use the designated buttons (refer to the physical product's button labels) to set the current time (hour, minute, AM/PM) and the current day of the week. Confirm each setting as per the on-screen prompts.
5.2 Changing Temperature Unit (Fahrenheit/Celsius)
The thermostat defaults to Fahrenheit (°F). To switch to Celsius (°C):
- Disconnect Power: Turn off power to the thermostat at the circuit breaker.
- Access Jumper: Carefully remove the thermostat from its wall mount to access the internal components. Locate the small jumper pin on the circuit board.
- Remove Jumper: Gently remove the jumper.
- Re-mount and Restore Power: Re-mount the thermostat and restore power at the circuit breaker.
- Reset Unit: After restoring power, it is necessary to perform a unit reset (e.g., power cycle) for the change to Celsius to take effect. Consult the physical product's detailed instructions for the exact reset procedure.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Adjusting Set Temperature
Use the visible Up (▲) and Down (▼) buttons on the front of the thermostat to manually adjust the desired set temperature. A temporary override will be active until the next programmed schedule change.
6.2 Programming Schedule
The ESP230-R allows for 7-day programmable scheduling, enabling you to set different temperatures for various times of the day and days of the week. This feature helps in optimizing comfort and energy savings.
- Access Programming: Lift the front cover to reveal the programming buttons.
- Select Day/Period: Use the appropriate buttons to navigate through the days of the week and the programmable periods (e.g., Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep).
- Set Temperature: For each period, use the Up/Down buttons to set the desired temperature.
- Save Settings: Follow the on-screen prompts to save your programmed schedule.
Tip: Setting back the temperature during unoccupied hours or while sleeping can lead to significant heating cost savings (up to 15%).
6.3 Display Information
The large LCD continuously displays:
- Current Time and Day
- Set Temperature (TEMP SET)
- Current Room Temperature (ROOM TEMP)
- Heat Indicator (illuminates when heating system is active)
7. Maintenance
The King Electric ESP230-R thermostat requires minimal maintenance.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the exterior of the thermostat with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or chemical sprays, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
- Clear Vents: Ensure that the small vents on the thermostat casing are free from dust and debris. Blocked vents can impair the accuracy of the internal temperature sensor.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Thermostat display is blank or not turning on. | No power supply. | Check the circuit breaker for the heating system and ensure it is in the 'ON' position. Verify all wiring connections are secure. |
| Inaccurate room temperature reading. | Thermostat exposed to direct sunlight, drafts, or internal heat from backlight. | Relocate thermostat if possible, or shield it from direct influences. If the backlight is suspected, note the consistent difference and adjust your setpoint accordingly. Ensure the wall box is sealed. |
| Heating system not responding to thermostat. | Set temperature is below room temperature; programming schedule override; wiring issue. | Ensure the set temperature is higher than the current room temperature. Check the active programming schedule. Verify wiring connections. |
| Difficulty changing temperature unit (F/C). | Unit not reset after jumper removal. | After removing the internal jumper, ensure the thermostat is fully reset (e.g., power cycle) for the change to take effect. |
