1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Manfrotto 501PLONG Long Rapid Connect Mounting Plate. This accessory is designed to provide optimal balance for camcorders and cameras, especially those with unusual weight distribution due to long telephoto lenses or heavy batteries. Its extended length and adjustable features allow for precise balancing on Manfrotto 501, 503, and 505 Pro Video Fluid Heads, enhancing stability and control during video capture.

2. Safety Information

  • Always ensure the mounting plate is securely attached to both your camera/camcorder and the fluid head before use.
  • Do not overtighten screws, as this may damage your equipment or the plate.
  • Verify the balance of your setup after any adjustments to prevent accidental tipping.
  • Keep small parts, such as screws, out of reach of children.
  • Use only with compatible Manfrotto fluid heads as specified.

  • Mounting Surface: Rubberized top surface for secure camera grip.
  • Camera Fixing Screws: Includes both 1/4" and 3/8" screws for various camera types.
  • Laser-Engraved Scale: Provides precise measurement for repeatable balance adjustments (0-110mm).
  • VHS Location Pin: Adjustable pin to prevent camera rotation and ensure proper alignment.

5. Setup

5.1 Attaching the Plate to Your Camera/Camcorder

  1. Identify the correct camera fixing screw (1/4" or 3/8") for your camera's tripod mount.
  2. Insert the chosen screw into the slot on the mounting plate.
  3. Align the screw with your camera's tripod mount and rotate the camera onto the screw until it is finger-tight.
  4. Ensure the camera is firmly secured to the plate without excessive force.
  5. Adjust the VHS location pin (if applicable to your camera) by sliding it along the plate's length to fit into your camera's corresponding hole, preventing rotation.

5.2 Attaching the Plate to the Fluid Head

  1. Ensure the quick-release lever on your Manfrotto 501, 503, or 505 Pro Video Fluid Head is in the open position.
  2. Slide the assembled camera and mounting plate into the fluid head's receiver.
  3. Push the plate fully into the receiver until it clicks into place or reaches the desired position for balancing.
  4. Secure the quick-release lever to lock the plate firmly in the fluid head.

5.3 Balancing Your Setup

Achieving proper balance is crucial for smooth camera movements and preventing strain on the fluid head. The long design of this plate facilitates a wider range of balance adjustments.

  1. With the camera and plate attached to the fluid head, release the tilt lock on the fluid head.
  2. Gently tilt the camera forward and backward. If the camera tends to fall forward or backward, it is not balanced.
  3. Loosen the quick-release lever on the fluid head slightly (do not fully release) to allow the plate to slide.
  4. Slide the mounting plate forward or backward within the fluid head's receiver until the camera remains level when the tilt lock is disengaged.
  5. Use the laser-engraved scale on the plate to note the optimal balance position for future reference.
  6. Once balanced, firmly secure the quick-release lever on the fluid head.

6. Operating the Mounting Plate

Once the plate is properly installed and balanced, its operation is integrated with your fluid head. The primary function of the plate is to maintain the balance of your camera setup.

  • Quick Release: The plate allows for rapid attachment and detachment of your camera from the fluid head. Always ensure the quick-release mechanism on your fluid head is fully engaged when operating.
  • Balance Adjustment: If you change lenses, add accessories, or modify your camera setup, re-evaluate the balance and adjust the plate's position on the fluid head as described in Section 5.3. The laser-engraved scale assists in precise, repeatable adjustments.
  • VHS Pin Functionality: The movable VHS location pin ensures that your camera remains correctly oriented on the plate, preventing unwanted rotation during use. Adjust its position to match your camera's base.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the plate with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by immediate drying. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Screw Inspection: Periodically check the camera fixing screws for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure they thread smoothly.
  • Storage: Store the mounting plate in a clean, dry environment when not in use.
