1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your PORTER-CABLE 6-Gallon Pancake Air Compressor, Model C2002. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the compressor to ensure proper usage and to prevent injury or damage.
The PORTER-CABLE C2002 is a portable, oil-free air compressor designed for various household and light-duty professional applications, including inflating tires, operating nail guns, and other air tools. Its compact pancake design offers stability and ease of transport.
2. Safety Information
Always follow basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury.
- Read All Instructions: Familiarize yourself with the compressor's controls and proper operation.
- Electrical Safety: Ensure the power source matches the compressor's requirements (120V). Use only grounded outlets.
- Personal Protective Equipment: Always wear safety glasses or goggles. Hearing protection is recommended during extended use.
- Work Area: Keep the work area clean, well-lit, and free from clutter. Do not operate in explosive atmospheres.
- Pressure Release: Always drain the tank and release all air pressure before performing maintenance or moving the compressor.
- Hot Surfaces: The compressor pump and motor can become hot during operation. Avoid contact.
3. Components Overview
Familiarize yourself with the main components of your air compressor:
- Tank: 6-gallon pancake-style tank for air storage.
- Motor/Pump Assembly: Oil-free pump for maintenance-free operation.
- Pressure Gauges: Displays tank pressure and regulated output pressure.
- Regulator Knob: Adjusts the output air pressure.
- Air Couplers: Two factory-installed couplers for connecting air tools.
- On/Off Switch: Controls power to the unit.
- Drain Valve: Located at the bottom of the tank for draining condensation.
- Integrated Cord Wrap: For convenient power cord storage.
- Handle: For easy portability.

4. Setup
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the compressor from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage.
- Placement: Place the compressor on a firm, level surface in a clean, well-ventilated area. Ensure the rubber feet are stable.
- Power Connection: Plug the power cord into a grounded 120V AC outlet. The integrated cord wrap (Figure 4.1) helps keep the cord tidy.
- Initial Break-in (Optional but Recommended): For optimal performance and longevity, run the compressor with the tank drain valve open for 15 minutes. This helps seat the piston rings.

5. Operating Instructions
- Connect Air Hose: Attach your air hose to one of the two quick-connect air couplers.
- Power On: Flip the red ON/OFF switch to the "ON" position. The compressor will begin to fill the tank.
- Set Pressure: Once the tank is full and the compressor stops, turn the regulator knob (Figure 5.2) clockwise to increase pressure or counter-clockwise to decrease pressure. Monitor the regulated pressure gauge to set the desired PSI for your air tool.
- Begin Operation: Connect your air tool to the hose and begin your task. The compressor will cycle on and off automatically to maintain tank pressure.
- Power Off: When finished, turn the ON/OFF switch to the "OFF" position.
- Drain Tank: Always drain the condensation from the tank after each use by opening the drain valve. This prevents rust and extends tank life.

6. Maintenance
The PORTER-CABLE C2002 features an oil-free pump, significantly reducing maintenance requirements. However, regular checks are still important:
- Drain Tank Daily: As mentioned, drain condensation from the tank after each use to prevent corrosion.
- Clean Air Filter: Periodically inspect and clean the air filter. A clogged filter can reduce performance.
- Inspect Hoses and Connections: Check air hoses and couplers for wear, cracks, or leaks. Replace damaged components immediately.
- General Cleaning: Keep the compressor exterior clean and free of dust and debris to ensure proper ventilation.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor does not start or stops unexpectedly. | No power; Thermal overload activated; Low voltage. | Check power connection/outlet; Allow motor to cool down; Use a proper extension cord if needed. |
| Air leaks. | Loose fittings; Damaged hose/coupler; Tank drain valve open. | Tighten fittings; Replace damaged parts; Close drain valve. |
| Insufficient air pressure. | Regulator set too low; Air leaks; Clogged air filter. | Adjust regulator; Check for and fix leaks; Clean/replace air filter. |
| Excessive noise or vibration. | Loose components; Compressor not on a stable surface. | Check and tighten all fasteners; Place on a stable, level surface. |
