1. Overview
The First Alert SCO5CN is a battery-operated combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detector designed to provide comprehensive protection for your home. It integrates two essential sensors into a single unit: a photoelectric sensor for detecting smoke from smoldering fires and an advanced electrochemical sensor for detecting carbon monoxide. This dual functionality helps minimize false alarms while ensuring reliable detection of both threats. The unit features a loud 85-decibel siren and distinct alarm sounds and indicator lights to differentiate between smoke and carbon monoxide warnings.

2. Setup and Installation
The First Alert SCO5CN detector is designed for easy, battery-powered installation, requiring no electrical wiring. It comes with a mounting bracket and hardware for secure placement on a wall or ceiling.
2.1 Unpacking and Battery Installation
- Carefully remove the detector and all components from the packaging.
- Locate the battery compartment on the side of the unit. Slide open the battery door.
- Insert the two AA batteries provided, ensuring correct polarity (+ and -). The unit will chirp once to indicate it has powered on.
- Close the battery door securely.

2.2 Mounting the Detector
- Choose an appropriate location for installation. For optimal safety, install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every bedroom. Carbon monoxide alarms should also be on every level and in sleeping areas.
- Attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling or wall using the provided screws and anchors. Ensure the bracket is firmly secured.
- Align the detector with the mounting bracket and twist clockwise until it locks into place.

3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Test/Silence Button
The large 'Test/Silence' button on the front of the detector serves two primary functions:
- Testing: Press and hold the button to test the unit's electronic circuitry, horn, and battery. The alarm will sound, and the indicator lights will flash.
- Silencing: Press the button to temporarily silence nuisance alarms (e.g., from cooking smoke) or the low battery chirp. The alarm will reset after a few minutes if the condition that caused the alarm has cleared.

Figure 6: The detector with the 'Test/Silence' button clearly visible, indicating its dual functionality for testing and temporarily silencing alarms.
3.2 Alarm Signals and Indicator Lights
The detector uses distinct audible and visual signals to communicate different conditions:
- Smoke Alarm: A series of three loud beeps, followed by a pause, repeating. The 'Smoke' indicator light will flash.
- Carbon Monoxide Alarm: A series of four loud beeps, followed by a pause, repeating. The 'CO' indicator light will flash.
- Low Battery Warning: A single chirp approximately once every minute. The 'Power' indicator light may also flash.
- End-of-Life Warning: Three chirps every minute, indicating the unit needs to be replaced.
4. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the continued reliability of your First Alert SCO5CN detector.
4.1 Weekly Testing
Test your detector weekly by pressing and holding the 'Test/Silence' button until the alarm sounds. This confirms the unit is functioning correctly.

4.2 Battery Replacement
When the detector emits a low battery chirp (one chirp per minute), replace both AA batteries immediately. Use the easy-access battery compartment for quick changes without removing the unit from its mounting bracket.
4.3 Cleaning
Clean your detector at least once a month to remove dust and debris that could interfere with its operation. Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to gently clean the vents and openings. Do not paint the detector.
4.4 End-of-Life Replacement
The detector has a limited lifespan. When the unit reaches its end-of-life (indicated by three chirps every minute), it must be replaced with a new one. This typically occurs after 10 years from the date of manufacture.

5. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Nuisance Alarm | Cooking smoke, steam, high humidity, dust. | Press the Test/Silence button. Ventilate the area. Clean the detector. |
| Single Chirp every minute | Low battery. | Replace both AA batteries immediately. |
| Three Chirps every minute | End-of-life warning. | Replace the entire detector unit. |
| Alarm sounds continuously | Presence of smoke or carbon monoxide. | Evacuate the premises immediately and call emergency services. |
