Figure 1: Front view of the Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff with Top Boost Distortion Pedal. This image displays the pedal's black chassis with white lettering, showing the control knobs for Volume, Top Boost, Treble, Mid, Bass, and Dist. It also clearly shows the "BOOST" and "BYPASS" footswitches, along with the input and output jacks on the sides. The "METAL MUFF WITH TOP BOOST" logo is prominently featured.

4. Setup

  1. Power Supply: The Metal Muff can be powered by a 9V battery (included) or an optional 9V DC power adapter (center negative). To install or replace the battery, unscrew the four screws on the bottom plate of the pedal and carefully remove the plate. Connect the 9V battery to the battery clip and place it inside the pedal. Replace the bottom plate and screws.
  2. Input Connection: Connect your guitar or other instrument to the INPUT jack on the right side of the pedal using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  3. Output Connection: Connect the AMP jack on the left side of the pedal to your amplifier's input using another standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  4. Signal Chain: For optimal performance, place the Metal Muff early in your signal chain, typically after wah pedals and before modulation or time-based effects.

5. Operating Instructions

Controls:

  • VOL (Volume) Knob: Controls the overall output volume of the Metal Muff. Turn clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease.
  • DIST (Distortion) Knob: Adjusts the amount of distortion. Turn clockwise for more aggressive, high-gain distortion; turn counter-clockwise for less distortion.
  • BASS Knob: Controls the low-frequency response of the distortion. Use to add fullness or tighten the bass.
  • MID Knob: Controls the mid-frequency response. Adjusting this knob can significantly alter the character of the distortion, from scooped metal tones to more pronounced, cutting mids.
  • TREBLE Knob: Controls the high-frequency response. Use to add clarity and bite to your tone.
  • TOP BOOST Knob: Sets the amount of high-frequency boost applied when the BOOST footswitch is engaged. This control is only active when the Top Boost is on.
  • BYPASS Footswitch: Toggles the effect on and off. When the effect is active, the corresponding LED will illuminate.
  • BOOST Footswitch: Engages or disengages the Top Boost feature. This footswitch is only active when the main distortion effect is engaged. The corresponding LED will illuminate when Top Boost is active.

Basic Operation:

Once connected, ensure your amplifier is on and set to a clean channel. Engage the Metal Muff by pressing the BYPASS footswitch. Adjust the DIST knob to achieve your desired level of distortion. Use the BASS, MID, and TREBLE knobs to sculpt your tone. For an additional high-frequency boost, press the BOOST footswitch and adjust the TOP BOOST knob to fine-tune the intensity of the boost.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the finish.
  • Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent leakage.
  • Battery Replacement: As mentioned in the Setup section, replace the 9V battery when the pedal's performance degrades or the indicator LEDs dim. Always use a fresh alkaline 9V battery.
  • Connections: Periodically check all cable connections for wear and tear. Ensure jacks are free of dust and debris.
