Setup
Unpacking and Placement
Carefully remove the receiver from its packaging. The unit weighs approximately 19.5 pounds (8.85 kg) and measures 17-3/8" W x 5" H x 13" D (44.13 cm W x 12.7 cm H x 33.02 cm D). Place the receiver on a stable, flat surface with adequate ventilation. Ensure there is sufficient airspace above and around the unit to prevent overheating.
Connecting Speakers
The RX-4109 features heavy-duty binding posts for reliable speaker connections. It supports two pairs of loudspeakers (A and B sets).
- Connect your main speakers to the "SPEAKERS A" terminals, ensuring correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).
- If using a second pair of speakers, connect them to the "SPEAKERS B" terminals.
- The receiver supports speakers with an impedance of 4-16 ohms for a single pair (A or B) or 8-16 ohms when both A and B speakers are used simultaneously.

Connecting Audio Sources
The receiver provides five analog RCA inputs for various audio components:
- PHONO: For connecting a turntable. Ensure your turntable has a built-in pre-amp or use an external one if needed. Connect the turntable's ground wire to the receiver's GND terminal.
- CD: For connecting a CD player.
- TAPE: For connecting a tape deck or other recording device.
- AUX: For connecting general auxiliary audio devices.
- AM/FM Antenna: Connect the supplied AM loop antenna and FM wire antenna to their respective terminals for radio reception. For improved FM reception, an F-type coax connector is provided, allowing connection to a cable jack or external antenna.
Power Connection
Once all audio and speaker connections are made, plug the receiver's power cord into a standard AC 120V, 60Hz wall outlet.

Maintenance
Cleaning
To clean the receiver, wipe the exterior surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents as they may damage the finish. Avoid spraying liquids directly onto the unit.
Ventilation
Proper ventilation is crucial for the longevity and performance of your receiver. Ensure that the ventilation openings on the top and sides of the unit are not blocked. Maintain a good deal of airspace above the receiver. Do not place other components directly on top of the receiver, as this can impede airflow and lead to overheating.
Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your Sherwood RX-4109 receiver, please consult the following common troubleshooting steps before seeking professional service.
No Sound Output
- Ensure the receiver is powered on and not in standby mode.
- Verify that the correct input source (CD, PHONO, AUX, etc.) is selected.
- Check all speaker connections at both the receiver and the speakers for secure and correct polarity.
- Confirm that the SPEAKER A or SPEAKER B buttons are engaged and "SPK OFF" is not displayed.
- Ensure the volume level is turned up and not muted.
- If headphones are plugged in, unplug them to enable speaker output.
Poor AM/FM Reception
- Check that the AM loop antenna and FM wire antenna are properly connected.
- Adjust the position and orientation of the antennas for better signal reception.
- Consider connecting an external FM antenna to the F-type coax connector for improved reception, especially in areas with weak signals.
- Ensure no other electronic devices are causing interference nearby.
Unit Overheating
- Ensure adequate ventilation around the receiver. Do not block the top or side vents.
- Do not stack other components directly on top of the receiver.
- Verify that speaker impedance matches the receiver's specifications (4-16 ohms for single pair, 8-16 ohms for both pairs). Using speakers with too low impedance can cause the receiver to overheat.
