1. Introduction

4. Setup

4.1. Charging the Battery

  1. Insert the rechargeable battery (D-LI63) into the battery charger (D-BC63(A)).
  2. Connect the AC plug cord (D-CO2U) to the charger and then to a power outlet.
  3. The charging indicator light will show the charging status. Charge until the light indicates completion.

4.2. Inserting the Battery and Memory Card

  1. Open the battery/card compartment cover on the camera.
  2. Insert the charged battery (D-LI63) with the correct orientation.
  3. Insert an SD or SDHC memory card (not included) into the card slot until it clicks into place.
  4. Close the compartment cover securely.

4.3. Attaching the Strap

Thread the camera strap (O-ST51) through the strap lug on the camera body and secure it as shown in the camera's quick start guide.

4.4. Initial Power On and Basic Settings

Press the power button to turn on the camera. Follow the on-screen prompts to set the date, time, and language. These settings are crucial for proper image management.

5. Operating the Camera

5.1. Basic Photography

  • Power On/Off: Press the POWER button.
  • Taking a Picture: Frame your shot using the 2.5-inch LCD display. Press the shutter button halfway to focus, then press fully to capture the image.
  • Zoom: Use the zoom lever to adjust the 3x optical zoom for wider or closer shots.

5.2. Shooting Modes

The Mode Palette provides quick access to 15 shooting modes. Rotate the mode dial or access through the menu to select:

  • Auto Picture Mode: The camera automatically detects shooting conditions (Landscape, Portrait, Night Scene, Program) and applies optimal settings.
  • Portrait Mode: Optimizes settings for photographing people, utilizing Face Recognition AF and AE.
  • Macro Mode: For close-up photography. The Auto-Macro function allows the camera to automatically switch to macro focus when needed, down to 4.0 inches (10 cm). Super-Macro mode allows photography as close as 2.0 inches.
  • Night Scene Mode: For shooting in low-light conditions.
  • Program Mode: Allows more control over settings while the camera sets exposure.

5.3. Digital Shake Reduction

The Digital Shake Reduction mode increases camera sensitivity up to ISO 3200 to allow for faster shutter speeds, reducing blur in low-light conditions or when shooting moving subjects.

5.4. Face Recognition AF and AE

When in Portrait mode, this function automatically detects and focuses on faces, adjusting exposure to prevent faces from being underexposed, even with backlighting.

5.5. Movie Recording

The Optio M30 can record high-quality movies at 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second. The Movie Shake Reduction function helps stabilize footage. Note that using Movie SR may result in a narrower field of view.

5.6. Playback Mode

Press the playback button to view your captured images and videos. The Calendar Display function allows you to retrieve images based on their capture date.

5.7. Flash Settings

Adjust flash settings via the menu. Options include Auto, Off, and Soft Flash. Soft Flash helps prevent overexposure during close-up flash photography.

5.8. Connecting to a Computer

Use the provided USB cable (I-USB7) to connect your camera to a computer for transferring images and videos. The camera supports PictBridge for direct printing.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning the Camera

  • Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the camera body.
  • For the lens and LCD screen, use a specialized lens cleaning cloth and solution.
  • Do not use organic solvents or strong cleaning agents.

6.2. Battery Care

  • Recharge the battery only with the dedicated charger.
  • Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently to prolong its lifespan.
  • Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use.

6.3. Storage

When storing the camera for extended periods, remove the battery and memory card. Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in a camera bag.
