3.2 Surface Cleaning

Follow these steps to prepare the surface:

  1. Remove all dirt, dust, grease, oil, salt, and chemical contaminants from the surface.
  2. For glossy surfaces, lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper to create a dull, etched finish.
  3. Wipe the surface clean with a lint-free cloth to remove any sanding dust or residue.
  4. Ensure the surface is completely dry before proceeding with application.

3.3 Environmental Conditions

For best results, apply when air and surface temperatures are between 50-90°F (10-32°C) and humidity is below 85%. Avoid spraying in direct sunlight, high winds, or dusty conditions to prevent uneven application and overspray.

4. Setup

Before applying the spray, follow these setup steps:

  1. Cover adjacent areas and objects with a drop cloth or newspaper to protect them from overspray.
  2. Shake the can vigorously for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Continue to shake occasionally during use to ensure proper mixing of reflective particles.
  3. Test spray on an inconspicuous area or a piece of scrap material to check the spray pattern and ensure the desired reflective effect.

5. Operating Instructions (Application)

Hold the can upright 10-16 inches (25-40 cm) from the surface. Apply the spray in a steady, back-and-forth motion, overlapping each stroke slightly. For optimal reflectivity and a smooth finish, apply several thin coats rather than one heavy coat.

  1. Apply a light, even coat.
  2. Allow 2 minutes of drying time between coats.
  3. Apply 2-3 light coats for optimal reflective performance. The coating will appear semi-transparent.

5.1 Drying Times

Approximate drying times are as follows:

Drying times may vary based on temperature, humidity, and film thickness.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning the Nozzle

If the spray valve clogs during use, follow these steps:

  1. Twist and pull off the spray tip.
  2. Rinse the tip thoroughly in mineral spirits. Do not use a pin or other sharp object to clear the stem, as this may damage the valve.
  3. Replace the tip, ensuring the opening is pointing away from you.
  4. If the can is partially used, invert it and spray for 2 seconds to clear the valve before storing.

6.2 Storage

Store the can in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and freezing temperatures. Ensure the cap is securely placed on the can to prevent accidental discharge or drying of the nozzle.

7. Troubleshooting

Table 1: Common Issues and Solutions
IssuePossible CauseSolution
Poor ReflectivityInsufficient coats applied, inadequate shaking of the can, incorrect application distance, or an unclean surface.Apply 2-3 thin, even coats. Shake the can vigorously before and frequently during use. Maintain a consistent spray distance of 10-16 inches. Ensure the surface is thoroughly clean and dry before application.
Clogging NozzlePaint drying within the nozzle or valve.Clean the spray tip with mineral spirits. If the can is partially used, invert it and spray for 2 seconds to clear the valve before storing.
Uneven FinishInconsistent spray motion, applying coats too heavily, or environmental factors like wind.Use a steady, continuous back-and-forth motion. Apply multiple thin coats rather than one thick coat. Avoid spraying in windy conditions.
