2. Adjusting Stand Height

Loosen the locking knobs on the stand sections and extend the central column to the desired height. Securely tighten all locking knobs to prevent accidental collapse.

To convert the stand into a boom arm, extend the top riser to its maximum. Locate the lever mechanism that allows the top section to pivot horizontally. Press this lever to release and position the boom arm.

4. Attaching Accessories and Counterweight

Attach your lighting equipment or other accessories to the spigot at the end of the boom arm. The stand is supplied with a counterweight sandbag. It is crucial to attach this sandbag to the opposite end of the boom arm to balance the weight of your equipment and ensure stability, especially when the arm is extended.

Operating Instructions

Standard Light Stand Use

For use as a standard light stand, ensure the boom arm is locked in the vertical position. Mount your light fixture directly onto the top spigot. Adjust the height using the locking knobs on the central column sections.

Boom Arm Use

When using the 420B as a boom arm, always ensure the counterweight bag is properly filled and attached to the rear end of the boom arm. This prevents the stand from tipping over due to unbalanced weight. Adjust the angle and extension of the boom arm using the dedicated locking mechanisms. Always secure all locks before leaving the stand unattended.

Safety Precautions

  • Always ensure the stand is placed on a stable, level surface.
  • Never exceed the maximum load capacity of 9 kg (for vertical stand use) or 2 kg (for boom arm at maximum extension).
  • Always use the provided counterweight when operating in boom arm configuration.
  • Tighten all locking knobs securely after making adjustments.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid placing the stand in high-traffic areas where it could be accidentally knocked over.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand.

  • Cleaning: Wipe down the stand with a soft, dry cloth after each use to remove dust and dirt. For stubborn grime, use a slightly damp cloth and mild soap, then dry thoroughly.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the moving parts, such as the locking mechanisms and telescopic sections, to ensure smooth operation. Avoid using oil-based lubricants as they can attract dust.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect all components for signs of wear, damage, or loose parts. Pay close attention to the locking knobs, leg braces, and spigot. If any part is damaged, discontinue use and replace it immediately.
  • Storage: Store the stand in a dry, clean environment, preferably in a protective bag, to prevent corrosion and damage.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand, refer to the following common solutions:

  • Stand Instability:
    • Ensure all legs are fully extended and locked.
    • Verify the stand is on a level surface.
    • If using as a boom, confirm the counterweight is properly attached and sufficient for the load.
  • Difficulty Adjusting Height/Extension:
    • Check that all locking knobs are fully loosened before attempting to adjust.
    • Clean and lubricate the telescopic sections if they feel stiff.
  • Equipment Slipping from Spigot:
    • Ensure the spigot attachment is securely tightened.
    • Verify that your equipment's mounting point is compatible with the spigot.
  • Boom Arm Sagging:
    • This may indicate the load exceeds the boom arm's capacity, especially at maximum extension. Reduce the load or use additional support.
    • Ensure the boom arm locking mechanism is fully engaged and tightened.
