Fluke I1000S

Fluke I1000S Large AC Current Probe Instruction Manual

Model: I1000S

1. Introduction

The Fluke I1000S is a high-performance clamp-on AC current probe designed for accurate current measurements in industrial and power environments. It is ideal for use with oscilloscopes to analyze distorted current waveforms and harmonics, providing precise data without the need to break into the circuit.

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Fluke I1000S AC Current Probe.

2. Key Features

3. Setup

Before using the Fluke I1000S, ensure all connections are secure and the probe is clean.

  1. Connect to Oscilloscope: Connect the BNC connector of the probe's coaxial cable directly to the input channel of your oscilloscope. Ensure the connection is firm.
  2. Connect to Multimeter (Optional): If using with a multimeter, attach the optional PM9081/001 BNC/Banana adapter to the probe's BNC connector, then connect the banana plugs to the appropriate input jacks on your multimeter.
  3. Select Range: Use the selector switch on the probe body to choose the appropriate current range (10 A, 100 A, or 1000 A) based on the expected current of the circuit being measured.
  4. Power On: Ensure your connected measurement device (oscilloscope or multimeter) is powered on and configured for current measurement.

4. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for accurate current measurement:

  1. Safety First: Always ensure the circuit is de-energized or appropriate safety precautions are taken before clamping the probe around a conductor. Observe the CAT III, 600 V safety rating.
  2. Open Clamp: Press the lever on the probe to open the clamp jaws.
  3. Encircle Conductor: Carefully place the open jaws around a single conductor carrying the AC current you wish to measure. Ensure the jaws close completely around the conductor. Do not clamp around multiple conductors if you intend to measure the current in only one.
  4. Select Range: Verify that the selected range on the probe (10 A, 100 A, or 1000 A) is suitable for the expected current. Start with a higher range if unsure to prevent overloading.
  5. Read Measurement: Observe the current reading on your connected oscilloscope or multimeter. The probe outputs are 100 mV/A, 10 mV/A, and 1 mV/A for the 10 A, 100 A, and 1000 A ranges respectively. Adjust your measurement device's settings as needed to interpret the output correctly.
  6. Disconnect: After measurement, open the clamp jaws and remove the probe from the conductor. Disconnect the probe from your measurement device.

Note: The passive filter helps in obtaining clean waveforms, especially for distorted signals and harmonics. Ensure proper grounding of your oscilloscope for optimal performance.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your Fluke I1000S probe.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Fluke I1000S probe, consider the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No reading or erratic reading
  • Incorrect range selected.
  • Probe jaws not fully closed.
  • Damaged cable or connector.
  • Conductor not properly centered.
  • Measurement device not configured correctly.
  • Select appropriate current range.
  • Ensure jaws are completely closed around a single conductor.
  • Inspect cable and connector for damage; replace if necessary.
  • Reposition the probe to center the conductor.
  • Check oscilloscope/multimeter settings (e.g., input impedance, scaling).
Noisy or distorted waveform on oscilloscope
  • External electromagnetic interference.
  • Improper grounding of oscilloscope.
  • High frequency noise not fully filtered.
  • Move probe away from strong magnetic fields.
  • Ensure oscilloscope is properly grounded.
  • Verify the passive filter is functioning; if issues persist, contact support.

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Fluke customer support.
