5. Setup
5.1 Unpacking
Carefully unpack your MX400 and check for any signs of damage. Ensure all components listed in the "What's in the Box" section are present.
- 4 Channel Mixer
- Power Adapter
5.2 Power Connection
- Locate the included 12V power adapter.
- Connect the power adapter's barrel connector to the 12V DC input jack on the rear of the MX400.
- Plug the power adapter into a suitable AC power outlet. The "ON" LED on the front panel will illuminate, indicating the unit is powered on.
5.3 Audio Connections
The MX400 features four 1/4" TS (mono) input jacks and one 1/4" TS (mono) output jack.
- Connect your audio sources (e.g., keyboards, drum machines, guitars with a preamp, other line-level devices) to the INPUT 1, INPUT 2, INPUT 3, and INPUT 4 jacks using 1/4" TS instrument cables.
- Connect the OUTPUT jack of the MX400 to the input of your main mixer, audio interface, amplifier, or recording device using a 1/4" TS instrument cable.
Note: This is a mono mixer. For stereo sources, you will need to sum them to mono before connecting, or use two MX400 units for a stereo setup.
6. Operation
6.1 Level Controls
Each of the four input channels (INPUT 1-4) has an independent LEVEL control knob on the front panel. These knobs allow you to adjust the volume of each individual input source.
- Turn the knob clockwise to increase the input level.
- Turn the knob counter-clockwise to decrease the input level.
To achieve an optimal mix, start with all level knobs at their minimum position. Gradually increase the level of each input until the desired balance is achieved. Monitor your main mixer or recording device's input levels to prevent clipping or distortion.
6.2 Typical Applications
- Sub-Mixing: Use the MX400 to combine multiple line-level sources (e.g., several keyboards, drum machine outputs) into a single mono input on a larger mixer, conserving channels.
- Instrument Combining: Mix outputs from various electronic instruments before sending them to an amplifier or audio interface.
- Expanding Inputs: Add more inputs to an existing setup that has limited available channels.
7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Disconnect the power adapter before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior of the unit. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
- Storage: If storing the unit for an extended period, disconnect all cables and the power adapter. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Ventilation: Ensure the unit has adequate ventilation and that no vents are blocked during operation.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power / ON LED off | Power adapter not connected or faulty; power outlet not active. | Ensure power adapter is securely connected to the unit and a live power outlet. Test the outlet with another device. |
| No sound output | Incorrect cable connections; input level knobs are at minimum; connected device's volume is low. | Check all 1/4" TS cable connections. Ensure input level knobs on the MX400 are turned up. Verify the volume on your connected audio sources and destination device. |
| Distorted sound | Input levels are too high; faulty cable. | Reduce the input level knobs on the MX400. Ensure the output level from your source devices is not too high. Try replacing audio cables. |
| Humming or buzzing noise | Ground loop; faulty cable; interference. | Ensure all equipment is properly grounded. Try different power outlets. Replace suspect cables. Keep audio cables away from power cables. |
