Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of your Nikon 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 AF Zoom-Nikkor lens. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the lens to ensure proper operation and to maximize its performance and longevity. This lens is designed for Nikon F-mount cameras and offers a versatile focal range from wide-angle to telephoto.

Safety Precautions

  • Do not look at the sun or other strong light sources through the lens, as this can cause permanent vision impairment.
  • Keep the lens away from direct sunlight when not in use to prevent fire hazards, as the lens can concentrate sunlight.
  • Avoid exposing the lens to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or strong magnetic fields.
  • Handle the lens with care. Do not drop it or subject it to strong impacts.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Operating the Lens

Focusing

  • Autofocus (AF): This lens supports autofocus on camera bodies equipped with an internal autofocus motor. Set your camera's focus mode to AF. The lens will automatically focus when the shutter button is half-pressed.
  • Manual Focus (MF): For cameras without an internal AF motor (e.g., Nikon D3xxx, D5xxx series), or when precise control is desired, set your camera's focus mode to MF. Rotate the focus ring on the lens until the subject appears sharp in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen. Some cameras may provide a focus indicator to assist with manual focusing.

Zooming

To change the focal length, rotate the zoom ring on the lens. The focal length markings (28, 35, 50, 70, 85) indicate the current setting. Rotate towards 28mm for a wider field of view and towards 85mm for a narrower, telephoto view.

Aperture Control

The lens features an aperture ring. For modern Nikon cameras (e.g., D750), you may need to lock the aperture ring at its narrowest setting (f/22) and control the aperture directly from the camera body. For older camera models or specific shooting scenarios, you can adjust the aperture directly using the ring on the lens.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Lens

  • Use a blower brush to remove dust and loose particles from the lens surfaces.
  • For smudges or fingerprints, use a clean, soft microfiber cloth specifically designed for optical lenses. Breathe lightly on the lens surface before wiping if necessary.
  • Do not use abrasive cloths, paper towels, or harsh chemical cleaners, as these can scratch or damage the lens coatings.
  • Clean the lens barrel with a soft, dry cloth.

Storage

  • Always attach the front and rear lens caps when the lens is not in use.
  • Store the lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • If storing for extended periods, consider using a dehumidifying agent to prevent mold growth.
