Electro-Harmonix LPB-1

Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 Linear Power Booster Pedal User Manual

Model: LPB-1

Introduction

The Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 Linear Power Booster is a faithful recreation of the original 1968 circuit, designed to increase the gain and saturation of your amplifier. This pedal adds impact and definition to your tone, making it suitable for boosting the input of other effects or directly driving your amplifier for enhanced sound.

Package Contents

  • Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 Linear Power Booster Pedal
  • 9V Battery

Setup

Powering the Pedal

The LPB-1 pedal can be powered by either a 9V battery or an optional 9V DC power adapter (center negative). A 9V battery is included with the pedal.

  • Battery Installation: To install or replace the 9V battery, unscrew the four screws on the bottom plate of the pedal. Carefully remove the bottom plate and connect the 9V battery to the battery clip. Replace the bottom plate and secure the screws.
  • AC Adapter (Optional): For extended use, an external 9V DC power adapter (center negative) can be connected to the DC input jack on the pedal. Ensure the adapter meets the specified voltage and polarity requirements.

Connecting the Pedal

Use standard 1/4 inch (6.35mm) instrument cables to connect the LPB-1 to your guitar and amplifier or other effects pedals.

  1. Connect your guitar to the INPUT jack on the right side of the pedal.
  2. Connect the AMP (output) jack on the left side of the pedal to your amplifier's input or to the input of the next pedal in your signal chain.

Operation

Controls

  • BOOST Knob: This is the primary control for the LPB-1. Turning this knob clockwise increases the output gain of the pedal, providing a louder and more saturated signal. Counter-clockwise rotation decreases the gain.
  • Footswitch: Engages or bypasses the effect. The LPB-1 features true bypass switching, ensuring your signal remains unaffected when the pedal is disengaged.
  • LED Indicator: Illuminates when the effect is active.

Usage Tips

  • Signal Boost: Use the LPB-1 to increase the overall volume of your signal for solos or to push the front end of your amplifier into natural overdrive.
  • Effect Enhancement: Place the LPB-1 before other effects like overdrive or distortion pedals to increase their input signal, resulting in more gain and sustain from those effects.
  • Signal Restoration: If you have a long signal chain with multiple pedals, the LPB-1 can be placed at the end of your chain (before the amplifier) to restore any lost signal strength and clarity.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound: Check all cable connections. Ensure the guitar, pedal, and amplifier are properly connected. Verify the 9V battery is correctly installed and has sufficient charge, or that the AC adapter is functioning and properly connected.
  • Weak Signal: If the signal is weak even with the BOOST knob turned up, check the battery level. Ensure all cables are in good condition and fully inserted.
  • Excessive Noise/Hum: Try using a different power source (e.g., a fresh battery or a high-quality isolated power supply). Ensure all cables are shielded and away from power lines or other sources of interference.
  • Pedal Not Engaging: Ensure the footswitch is fully pressed. If using an AC adapter, confirm it's providing power.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the pedal with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent leakage.
  • Connections: Periodically check all input/output jacks and power connections for any signs of wear or damage.
