Setup
Mounting the Lens
- Ensure your camera is powered off.
- Remove the body cap from your camera and the rear lens cap from the lens.
- Align the mounting mark (white dot) on the lens barrel with the mounting mark on the camera body.
- Insert the lens into the camera's lens mount and rotate it counter-clockwise until it clicks into place.
For a visual guide on mounting the lens, refer to the video below:
Video 1: Demonstrates how to mount the Nikon 70-300mm lens onto a camera body. The video also shows the lens in use for high school football photography, highlighting its telephoto capabilities and ease of attachment.
Attaching the Lens Hood (HB-36)
Align the lens hood with the front of the lens and rotate it until it locks into place. The lens hood helps to reduce flare and protect the front element of the lens.
Attaching Lens Caps
Always keep the front (LC-67) and rear (LF-4) lens caps on when the lens is not in use to protect the optical elements from dust and scratches.
Operating the Lens
Zooming
Rotate the zoom ring to adjust the focal length between 70mm and 300mm. This allows you to frame your subject from various distances.

Focus Modes
The lens features two focus modes:
- M/A (Autofocus with Manual Override): Allows you to manually adjust focus even when the camera is in autofocus mode.
- M (Manual Focus): For full manual control over focusing.
Vibration Reduction (VR)
The VRII system helps to reduce blur caused by camera shake. Activate VR when shooting handheld, especially in low light or at longer focal lengths, to achieve sharper images. Consult your camera's manual for specific VR settings.

Maintenance
Cleaning the Lens
- Use a blower brush to remove dust from the lens surface.
- For smudges or fingerprints, use a soft, clean cotton cloth or lens tissue lightly moistened with lens cleaner. Wipe gently in a circular motion from the center outwards.
- Never use organic solvents such as paint thinner or benzene to clean the lens.
Storage
- Store the lens in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- If storing for an extended period, place it in a sealed container with a desiccant to prevent mold and mildew.
- Avoid storing the lens with mothballs or other chemicals that may damage coatings.
Troubleshooting
Lens Not Attaching Securely
- Ensure the mounting marks on the lens and camera body are correctly aligned before rotating.
- Confirm that the lens is rotated fully until a click is heard, indicating it is locked in place.
Blurry Images
- Check if Vibration Reduction (VR) is enabled, especially when shooting handheld or in low light.
- Verify that the focus mode is set correctly (M/A for autofocus, M for manual focus).
- Ensure sufficient shutter speed for the focal length being used to prevent motion blur.
- Clean the lens elements if smudges or dust are present.
Autofocus Issues
- Confirm the lens is set to M/A mode.
- Ensure there is enough light for the autofocus system to function effectively.
- Check for any obstructions on the lens or camera's autofocus sensors.
