5. Installation Guide

5.1. Before You Begin

  1. Turn Off Power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse box controlling the circuit you will be working on. Turn off the power completely. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Remove Old Switch: Carefully remove the wallplate and unscrew the existing switch from the electrical box. Disconnect the wires from the old switch, noting their connections.

5.2. Wiring Instructions

The Leviton 2651-2I switch offers both side wiring (screw terminals) and Quickwire push-in wiring for faster installation. It is also designed for connection to 12 or 10 AWG aluminum conductors (CO/ALR devices).

  1. Identify Wires: You should have a hot wire (usually black), a load wire (usually black or red), and a ground wire (bare copper or green).
  2. Connect Ground Wire: Connect the bare copper or green insulated ground wire from the electrical box to the green grounding screw on the switch. Tighten securely.
  3. Connect Hot and Load Wires:
    • Using Screw Terminals: Strip approximately 1/2 inch of insulation from the hot and load wires. Form a hook at the end of each wire and loop it clockwise around the brass screw terminals on the switch. Tighten the screws firmly to ensure good contact.
    • Using Quickwire Push-in Terminals (for 14 AWG solid copper wire only): Strip approximately 1/2 inch of insulation from the hot and load wires. Firmly push the stripped end of each wire into the appropriate Quickwire hole on the back of the switch until it stops. Do not use Quickwire terminals for aluminum wiring or stranded copper wire.
  4. CO/ALR Compatibility: If connecting to 12 or 10 AWG aluminum conductors, use the screw terminals and ensure proper CO/ALR wiring practices are followed.

5.3. Mounting

  1. Position Switch: Carefully fold the wires into the electrical box, leaving enough room for the switch. Insert the switch into the electrical box.
  2. Secure Switch: Use the provided mounting screws to secure the switch to the electrical box. Do not overtighten.
  3. Install Wallplate: Attach the wallplate over the switch and secure it with its screws.
  4. Restore Power: Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker or fuse box.
  5. Test Operation: Test the switch to ensure it functions correctly.

6. Operating Instructions

The Leviton 2651-2I is a single-pole toggle switch designed for simple ON/OFF operation of a single light fixture or outlet from one location.

  • To turn the connected device ON, push the toggle switch upwards.
  • To turn the connected device OFF, push the toggle switch downwards.

7. Maintenance

The Leviton 2651-2I switch requires minimal maintenance. To ensure longevity and proper function:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the switch and wallplate with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish.
  • Inspection: If you notice any signs of damage, such as cracks in the toggle or discoloration, turn off power at the circuit breaker and inspect the switch. Replace if necessary.
