Yuasa YUAM320BS YTX20L-BS Maintenance Free AGM Battery User Manual

Model: YUAM320BS | Brand: Yuasa

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your Yuasa YUAM320BS YTX20L-BS Maintenance Free AGM Battery. Please read this manual thoroughly before activation, installation, or operation to ensure proper handling and longevity of the product.

The Yuasa YTX20L-BS is a 12 Volt, 18 amp-hour, 270 cold cranking amps (CCA) battery designed for powersports applications. It features advanced lead-calcium technology and Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) separators, making it maintenance-free, spill-proof, and eliminating the need to add water after initial activation.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Battery acid is corrosive and can cause severe burns. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye protection and gloves, when handling the acid pack and battery.

WARNING: Batteries produce explosive gases. Keep sparks, flames, and cigarettes away from the battery. Ensure adequate ventilation when charging or working near the battery.

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not tilt the battery after filling, as it may leak.
  • Do not attempt to open or tamper with the sealed battery after activation.
  • Dispose of used batteries responsibly at an authorized recycling center.
  • In case of contact with acid, flush immediately with water and seek medical attention.

3. Setup and Activation

The Yuasa YTX20L-BS battery is supplied dry with a separate acid pack. It must be filled with electrolyte and allowed to stand before initial use. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Preparation: Place the battery on a level surface. Ensure you are in a well-ventilated area and wearing appropriate safety gear (gloves, eye protection).
  2. Remove Seal: Carefully remove the sealing strip from the top of the battery. Do not discard this strip.
  3. Prepare Acid Pack: Take the acid pack and remove the cap strip. Do not pierce or cut the individual acid containers.
  4. Fill Battery: Invert the acid pack and align the sealed sections with the battery's fill holes. Push down firmly so the seals are broken and the acid begins to flow into the battery cells.
  5. Allow to Fill: Ensure all acid drains from the pack into the battery. This may take up to 20 minutes. Do not remove the acid pack until it is completely empty.
  6. Seal Battery: Once empty, carefully remove the acid pack. Immediately and firmly press the sealing strip (removed in step 2) back onto the battery's fill holes. Ensure it is securely seated.
  7. Stand Time: Allow the battery to stand for at least 1 hour after filling. This allows the electrolyte to be fully absorbed by the AGM separators and for the battery to stabilize. For optimal performance, a longer stand time (e.g., 2-3 hours) or a slow charge is recommended before first use.
  8. Initial Charge (Recommended): Although the battery is typically 80% charged after activation, an initial charge with a suitable battery charger (1.8 Amps for 5-10 hours) is recommended for maximum performance and lifespan.

4. Operating Instructions

Once activated and optionally charged, the Yuasa YTX20L-BS battery is ready for installation and operation in your vehicle.

  • Installation: Install the battery securely in your vehicle's battery compartment, ensuring proper polarity (+ to + and - to -) when connecting the terminals. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific installation procedures.
  • Maintenance-Free Design: This AGM battery is designed to be maintenance-free. It does not require water additions throughout its service life. The absorbed glass mat technology prevents electrolyte leakage and evaporation.
  • Charging Method: If the battery requires charging, use a charger specifically designed for AGM batteries. The standard charging method is 1.8 Amps for 5-10 hours. A quick charge method is 9.0 Amps for 1 hour. Always monitor the battery during charging.

5. Maintenance

While the Yuasa AGM battery is maintenance-free in terms of water addition, periodic care is essential for optimal performance and extended lifespan.

  • Periodic Charging: If the vehicle is not used regularly, the battery should be periodically charged to prevent sulfation and maintain its charge. A trickle charger or smart charger designed for AGM batteries is recommended.
  • Terminal Inspection: Periodically inspect the battery terminals for corrosion. Clean any corrosion with a wire brush and a baking soda/water solution. Ensure terminal connections are tight.
  • Storage: When storing the battery for extended periods, ensure it is fully charged and stored in a cool, dry place. Disconnect it from the vehicle to prevent parasitic drains. Recharge every 3-6 months during storage.
  • Cleaning: Keep the battery case clean and dry. A damp cloth can be used to wipe down the exterior.
