1. Product Overview
The First Alert GCO1CN is a combination alarm designed to detect dangerous levels of explosive gases (methane and propane) and carbon monoxide (CO). This device provides continuous monitoring and alerts users with a loud 85-decibel alarm and a clear backlit digital display showing current and peak gas levels. It features a plug-in design with a 9-volt battery backup for continued operation during power outages.

2. Important Safety Information
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be fatal. Explosive gases like methane and propane are also highly dangerous. This alarm is designed to provide early warning of their presence. In the event of an alarm, immediately move to fresh air and contact emergency services (e.g., 911 or your gas provider).

3. Installation and Setup
3.1 Powering the Unit
The GCO1CN alarm operates by plugging directly into a standard AC wall outlet. Ensure the outlet is not controlled by a switch. A 9-volt battery (included) provides backup power in case of an electrical outage. Install the battery before plugging the unit into the wall.

3.2 Recommended Placement
For optimal protection, install at least one carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home and in every bedroom. Explosive gases are typically lighter than air (methane) or heavier than air (propane), so placement should consider the type of gas being monitored. For general safety, place the alarm at least 5 feet from fuel-burning appliances to avoid nuisance alarms.

4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Digital Display
The backlit digital display shows the current level of carbon monoxide or explosive gas detected. It can also show peak levels recorded since the last reset. Refer to the display for immediate readings and historical data.
4.2 Test/Silence Button
Press the Test/Silence button to test the alarm's functionality. During a test, the alarm will sound, and the display will show a test sequence. Pressing this button during an alarm will temporarily silence it for a short period, allowing you to investigate the cause.
4.3 Remote Mute Feature
This alarm can be configured to work with almost any standard household remote control (not included) to silence nuisance alarms from a distance. Follow the instructions in the full manual for remote control programming.

5. Maintenance and Testing
5.1 Regular Testing
Test your alarm weekly by pressing and holding the Test/Silence button until the alarm sounds. This confirms the electronic circuitry, alarm, and battery are working correctly.

5.2 Battery Replacement
The 9-volt backup battery should be replaced at least once a year, or immediately when the low battery signal sounds. Use only the specified replacement battery type.
5.3 Alarm Replacement
Alarms do not last indefinitely. This unit has a service life of approximately 5-10 years. Replace the entire alarm unit according to the manufacturer's recommended replacement date, typically found on the back of the unit.

6. Troubleshooting
- Nuisance Alarms: If the alarm sounds without an apparent gas leak, ensure it is not placed too close to fuel-burning appliances, areas with high humidity, or strong chemical fumes. Ventilate the area and reset the alarm.
- Low Battery Signal: A chirping sound or a 'Low Battery' indicator on the display means the 9-volt backup battery needs replacement. Replace it immediately.
- Alarm Sounds for Gas: If the alarm indicates the presence of explosive gas or carbon monoxide, treat it as a real emergency. Evacuate all occupants to fresh air immediately and call 911 or your local emergency services. Do not re-enter the premises until cleared by emergency personnel.
- No Display/No Power: Check if the unit is securely plugged into a working AC outlet. Ensure the 9-volt battery is correctly installed and charged.
