4. Setup and First Use

Before using your pressure cooker for the first time, follow these steps:

  1. Unpack: Carefully remove all packaging materials and inspect the cooker for any damage.
  2. Wash: Wash the cooker body, lid, gasket, and vent weight with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  3. Gasket Placement: Ensure the rubber gasket is properly seated in the groove on the underside of the lid.
  4. Vent Weight Check: Verify that the vent weight is clean and free from obstructions.

For a visual guide on how to properly assemble and secure the lid, please refer to the product overview video below:

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for safe and effective pressure cooking:

  1. Add Ingredients: Place your food and the required amount of liquid into the cooker body. Do not fill the cooker more than two-thirds full for most foods, and no more than half full for foods that expand, such as pulses or rice.
  2. Close the Lid: Place the lid on the cooker body, ensuring the gasket is correctly positioned. Align the lid handle with the body handle and press down firmly. Rotate the lid handle to lock it securely into place. The lid should fit snugly inside the rim.
  3. Place Vent Weight: Once the lid is securely closed, place the vent weight (pressure regulator) on the vent tube.
  4. Heat Application: Place the cooker on a heat source (gas, electric, ceramic, halogen). Use high heat until steam begins to escape steadily from the vent weight.
  5. Reduce Heat: Once steam is escaping steadily, reduce the heat to maintain a gentle, steady flow of steam. Cook for the time specified in your recipe.
  6. Release Pressure: After cooking, remove the cooker from the heat. Allow the pressure to drop naturally, or use the quick release method (if applicable and safe for your recipe) by placing the cooker under cold running water (avoiding the vent weight). Do not attempt to open the lid until all pressure has been released and the safety valve has dropped.
  7. Open the Lid: Once pressure is fully released, gently turn the lid handle to unlock and lift the lid. Always open the lid away from your face to avoid steam burns.

Understanding the correct capacity for your cooking needs is important. The 2.0 Litre model is ideal for 2-3 persons. Hawkins offers various sizes to suit different family needs:

6. Maintenance and Care

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your pressure cooker:

  • Cleaning: Wash the cooker thoroughly after each use. The cooker is not dishwasher safe. Hand wash with warm soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge.
  • Gasket Care: Remove the gasket from the lid after each use, wash it, and allow it to dry completely before storing. Replace the gasket if it becomes hard, cracked, or loses its elasticity (typically every 1-2 years with regular use).
  • Vent Tube: Regularly check the vent tube on the lid for any food particles or blockages. Clean it with a thin wire or brush if necessary.
  • Safety Valve: Inspect the safety valve periodically. If it appears damaged or has activated, it must be replaced immediately.
  • Storage: Store the cooker with the lid inverted on the body to allow air circulation and prevent odors.

7. Troubleshooting

Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:

  • Steam Leaking from Lid:
    • Check if the lid is properly closed and locked.
    • Inspect the rubber gasket for proper seating, damage, or wear. Replace if necessary.
    • Ensure the rim of the cooker body and the lid are clean and free from food particles.
  • Pressure Not Building:
    • Verify the vent weight is correctly placed on the vent tube.
    • Check for steam leaks from the lid or safety valve.
    • Ensure there is sufficient liquid inside the cooker.
  • Food Sticking to Bottom:
    • Always use enough liquid as specified in recipes.
    • Ensure heat is reduced after pressure is achieved to prevent scorching.
  • Safety Valve Activates:
    • This indicates excessive pressure. Immediately remove from heat.
    • Check the vent tube for blockages after the cooker has cooled and depressurized.
    • Ensure the cooker was not overfilled.
    • The safety valve is a one-time use component; it must be replaced after activation.
