4. Setup

Before first use, it is crucial to properly set up your coffee brewer to ensure optimal performance and safety.

  1. Placement: Place the coffee brewer on a flat, stable surface near an electrical outlet.
  2. Initial Fill: The BUNN Speed Brew features an internal hot water tank. For the first use, fill the carafe with cold water and pour it into the top reservoir. Repeat this step until the internal tank is full (approximately 70 ounces or 2 liters).
  3. Power On: Plug the brewer into a grounded electrical outlet. Turn on the main power switch (usually located on the side or back). The internal tank will begin heating the water to the optimal brewing temperature of 200°F (93°C). This process may take about 15-20 minutes for the first heating cycle.
  4. Keep Plugged In: For the fastest brewing, it is recommended to keep the brewer plugged in and the internal tank heated at all times. This allows for instant brewing when you're ready.

5. Operating Instructions

Once your BUNN Speed Brew is set up and the internal tank is heated, brewing coffee is a quick and simple process.

  1. Prepare the Funnel: Place a BUNN-specific coffee filter (1/4 inch taller than standard filters) into the funnel. Add your desired amount of ground coffee to the filter.
  2. Insert Funnel: Slide the funnel with coffee grounds into its designated slot in the brewer.
  3. Place Carafe: Ensure the empty glass carafe is placed securely on the warming plate beneath the funnel.
  4. Add Water: Open the lid of the top reservoir. Fill the carafe with the desired amount of cold water (e.g., 4 cups for 20 oz, up to 10 cups for 50 oz). Pour this cold water into the top reservoir.
  5. Initiate Brew: Close the lid of the top reservoir. This action will activate the brewing cycle, displacing the hot water from the internal tank over the coffee grounds.
  6. Brew Time: Your coffee will begin brewing almost immediately. A full 10-cup carafe typically brews in about 4 minutes. Smaller quantities, such as 20 oz for a travel mug, can brew in approximately 2 minutes.
  7. Warmer Plate: The brewer features a switch-activated warmer plate to keep your coffee at an optimal serving temperature. Ensure the warmer switch is in the "ON" position if you wish to keep the coffee hot after brewing.

6. Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance will prolong the life of your coffee brewer and ensure consistent coffee quality.

  • Daily Cleaning: Wash the carafe and funnel with mild detergent and warm water after each use. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Exterior Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the brewer with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
  • Descaling: Over time, mineral deposits can build up in the internal hot water tank. Descale your brewer periodically (e.g., every 3-6 months, depending on water hardness) using a descaling solution or a mixture of white vinegar and water. Follow the descaling product's instructions carefully.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your BUNN BX Speed Brew, refer to the following common solutions:

  • No Coffee Brews: Ensure the brewer is plugged in, the power switch is on, and the internal tank has had sufficient time to heat up. Check that the lid is fully closed after pouring water into the reservoir.
  • Coffee is Not Hot Enough: Verify the warmer plate switch is in the "ON" position. Ensure the internal tank is always kept heated by keeping the unit plugged in.
  • Coffee Grounds Overflow: Use BUNN-specific coffee filters, which are designed to be 1/4 inch taller than standard filters to prevent overflow, especially with finer grinds.
  • Slow Brewing: If the brewer is consistently brewing slowly, it may indicate a mineral buildup in the internal tank. Refer to the descaling instructions in the Maintenance section.
