Setup
Follow these steps carefully for proper assembly and initial setup of your Marantz TT-15S1 turntable.
1. Turntable Placement
Place the turntable chassis on a stable, level surface, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive dust. The three height-adjustable aluminum feet provide a strong base and can be adjusted to ensure the turntable is perfectly level.

2. Motor Assembly and Placement
The external motor unit is designed to minimize vibration transfer to the plinth. Place the motor unit next to the turntable chassis, ensuring it is stable. Attach the motor pulley to the motor shaft. Some users find placing a 2-inch circular felt pad under the motor can further reduce vibration and optimize belt alignment.

3. Platter and Belt Installation
Carefully place the turntable platter onto the center shaft. Using the provided white cotton gloves to avoid fingerprints, gently loop one of the silicon drive belts around the motor pulley and the outer rim of the platter. Ensure the belt is seated correctly and not twisted.
4. Tonearm and Cartridge Installation
The anodized aluminum tonearm is a critical component for sound quality. Attach the ClearAudio Virtuoso MM cartridge to the headshell using the provided screws. Connect the four delicate wires from the tonearm to the corresponding pins on the cartridge (Red-Right Hot, Green-Right Ground, White-Left Hot, Blue-Left Ground). Use tweezers for precision. Secure the headshell to the tonearm.

Figure 4: Close-up of the tonearm base, illustrating the counterweight and anti-skate adjustment mechanisms.
5. Tonearm Adjustment (Tracking Force and Anti-Skate)
Accurate tonearm adjustment is crucial for optimal sound and record longevity. First, balance the tonearm so it floats freely. Then, set the tracking force using the counterweight according to the cartridge manufacturer's recommendation (typically 1.8-2.2 grams for the Virtuoso MM cartridge). Use a stylus force gauge for precise measurement. Finally, adjust the anti-skate mechanism to prevent the stylus from pulling towards the center or outer edge of the record. A test record can be used for fine-tuning this setting.
6. Connecting to an Amplifier/Receiver
Connect the turntable's audio cables to the "Phono" input of your amplifier or receiver. Ensure both the audio ground cable from the tonearm and the separate 5' ground wire from the turntable chassis are connected to the signal ground terminal on your amplifier to prevent hum. If your amplifier does not have a dedicated "Phono" input, a separate phono pre-amplifier (MM compatible) will be required.
Operating the Turntable
Once set up, operating the Marantz TT-15S1 is straightforward.
1. Powering On/Off
Plug the motor's AC power cord into a suitable wall outlet or power strip. The turntable does not have a dedicated power switch on the unit itself; it is designed to be powered on/off via the wall outlet or a switched power strip. This allows the motor to run continuously for optimal speed stability, or to be easily turned off when not in use.
2. Selecting Playback Speed
The TT-15S1 supports two playback speeds: 33 1/3 RPM and 45 RPM. To change speed, manually move the drive belt to the appropriate groove on the motor pulley. The smaller diameter groove is for 33 1/3 RPM, and the larger diameter groove is for 45 RPM.
3. Playing a Record
- Place a record on the platter. You may use the included felt turntable pad.
- If desired, place the record clamp (Clever Clamp by Souther Engineering) over the record spindle to flatten the record and reduce vibrations.
- Gently lift the tonearm using the cueing lever.
- Position the tonearm over the desired starting groove of the record.
- Slowly lower the cueing lever to gently drop the stylus onto the record.
- At the end of playback, lift the tonearm using the cueing lever and return it to the tonearm rest.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your turntable.
- Cleaning the Plinth and Platter: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe down the acrylic plinth and platter. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Stylus Cleaning: Gently clean the stylus regularly using a dedicated stylus brush or cleaning fluid. Always brush from back to front.
- Drive Belt Inspection: Periodically inspect the drive belts for signs of wear, stretching, or cracking. Replace them if necessary to maintain accurate playback speed.
- Bearing Lubrication: Apply a small drop of the provided bearing oil to the main platter bearing shaft periodically, as instructed in the original packaging or by Marantz support, to ensure smooth rotation.
- Dust Cover: While not included, consider acquiring a dust cover to protect the turntable from dust and debris when not in use.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your turntable.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound or very low sound | Incorrect input selected on amplifier; loose cable connections; phono pre-amp not used (if required); damaged cartridge/stylus. | Ensure amplifier is set to "Phono" input. Check all audio cable connections. If your amplifier lacks a phono input, use an external phono pre-amplifier. Inspect cartridge and stylus for damage. |
| Humming noise | Ground wires not connected; improper grounding; interference from other electronics. | Ensure both ground wires (from tonearm cable and chassis) are securely connected to the amplifier's ground terminal. Try moving the turntable away from other electronic devices. |
| Motor noise/vibration | Motor not isolated; improper placement. | Ensure the motor unit is placed on a stable surface, separate from the main plinth. Consider placing a sorbothane or felt pad under the motor for additional isolation. |
| Inconsistent playback speed | Worn or stretched drive belt; motor pulley/belt not clean; bearing friction. | Inspect and replace the drive belt if necessary. Clean the motor pulley and belt with a lint-free cloth. Ensure the platter bearing is properly lubricated. |
| Stylus skips or jumps | Incorrect tracking force; improper anti-skate setting; uneven surface; dirty/damaged record or stylus. | Re-adjust tracking force and anti-skate. Ensure the turntable is perfectly level. Clean the record and stylus. Inspect stylus for damage. |
