3. Setup

Initial Setup and Priming

Before first use, or if the machine has been stored for an extended period, it is essential to prime the unit to ensure proper water flow and operation.

  1. Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water up to the maximum level indicator.
  2. Carefully insert the water tank into its position and push down firmly until it is seated correctly. Air bubbles should appear in the water tank, indicating proper insertion.
  3. Place an empty cup directly under the grouphead. The filter holder is not required for this step.
  4. Turn the main power switch to the 'ON' position.
  5. Turn the center rotary dial to the right, towards the coffee cup symbol.
  6. The pump will activate, and within a few seconds, water should begin to flow into the cup. This indicates the unit is primed.
  7. If water does not flow, refer to the Troubleshooting section for "Unit does not prime."

4. Operating Instructions

Making Espresso

  1. Ensure the machine is primed and the water reservoir is filled.
  2. Insert the desired filter basket into the portafilter.
  3. Fill the filter basket with finely ground espresso coffee. Do not overfill.
  4. Tamp the coffee grounds evenly with a tamper (not included).
  5. Attach the portafilter to the grouphead by aligning it and twisting firmly to the right until secure.
  6. Place one or two espresso cups on the drip tray, under the portafilter spouts.
  7. Turn the center rotary dial to the right (coffee symbol) to start brewing.
  8. Once the desired amount of espresso is dispensed, turn the dial back to the center 'OFF' position to stop the flow.
  9. Carefully remove the portafilter and discard the used coffee grounds.

Frothing Milk (for Cappuccinos and Lattes)

  1. Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to about one-third full.
  2. Turn the center rotary dial to the left, towards the steam symbol, to activate the steam function. Allow the machine to heat up until the steam indicator light illuminates steadily.
  3. Position the steam wand just below the surface of the milk in the pitcher.
  4. Slowly open the steam knob (usually located on the side or top of the machine) to release steam.
  5. Move the pitcher up and down gently to create foam. For lattes, aim for less foam and more steamed milk.
  6. Once the milk is frothed to your preference and reaches the desired temperature (approximately 150-160°F / 60-70°C), close the steam knob.
  7. Turn the rotary dial back to the center 'OFF' position.
  8. Wipe the steam wand immediately with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying.

5. Maintenance

Daily Cleaning

  • Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray and grid daily.
  • Portafilter & Filter Baskets: After each use, remove the portafilter, discard coffee grounds, and rinse the portafilter and filter basket under hot water.
  • Steam Wand: Wipe the steam wand immediately after frothing milk. Periodically, remove the tip and clean any milk residue with a small brush or pin.
  • Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Descaling

Regular descaling is crucial to maintain machine performance and extend its lifespan, especially in areas with hard water. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage, typically every 2-3 months.

  1. Prepare a descaling solution according to the descaler manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Fill the water reservoir with the descaling solution.
  3. Place a large container under the grouphead and steam wand.
  4. Turn on the machine and allow it to heat up.
  5. Run approximately half of the solution through the grouphead by turning the dial to the coffee symbol.
  6. Turn the dial to the steam symbol and release steam through the steam wand until the remaining solution is used.
  7. Turn off the machine and let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
  8. Rinse the water reservoir thoroughly and fill it with fresh water.
  9. Repeat steps 3-6 with fresh water to rinse the internal components. Repeat this rinsing process at least twice to ensure all descaling solution is removed.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Lello 1375 Ariete Cafe Prestige Coffee Maker.

ProblemReasonSolution
Unit does not prime (no water flow)Air is trapped between the water tank inlet and the pump, preventing water flow.
  1. Remove the water tank and re-insert it into position. Repeat this 2 to 3 times to allow trapped air to escape into the water tank.
  2. Repeat the initial priming instructions: turn the power switch on, then turn the center dial to the right (coffee symbol) for 30 to 40 seconds, or until the unit primes and water flows.
  3. Repeat the priming process as many times as necessary. This may take a few minutes.
Espresso flows too slowly or not at allCoffee grounds are too fine or tamped too hard; machine needs descaling.
  • Use a slightly coarser grind or tamp with less pressure.
  • Descale the machine if it hasn't been done recently.
  • Clean the filter basket and grouphead thoroughly.
Espresso flows too quickly (weak coffee)Coffee grounds are too coarse or not tamped enough.
  • Use a finer grind or tamp with more pressure.
  • Ensure the filter basket is adequately filled.
No steam from the steam wandSteam wand is clogged; machine not heated sufficiently.
  • Clean the steam wand tip with a pin or small brush.
  • Ensure the machine has fully preheated for steam (steam indicator light steady).
