Setup Guide

1. Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove the FCB1010 from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage that may have occurred during transit. Ensure all components listed in the "What's in the Box" section are present. The package should include the Behringer FCB1010 MIDI Foot Controller, a User's Manual, and a Power Cable.

2. Power Connection

Connect the supplied power cable to the IEC connector on the rear panel of the FCB1010 and then to a standard AC power outlet. The unit features a built-in power supply.

3. MIDI Connections

The FCB1010 features MIDI In and Out/Through ports. Use standard MIDI cables to connect the controller to your MIDI-compatible devices (e.g., synthesizers, effects processors, audio interfaces).

  • Connect the MIDI OUT of the FCB1010 to the MIDI IN of your MIDI device.
  • If your setup requires MIDI data from another source to pass through the FCB1010, connect that source's MIDI OUT to the FCB1010's MIDI IN. The FCB1010 can merge incoming MIDI data with its own generated data and send it out via the MIDI OUT port.

4. Analog Switch Connections

The FCB1010 includes two analog switch connections (e.g., for guitar amplifiers). These can be used to control functions like channel switching on an amplifier. Connect a standard 1/4-inch TS cable from the FCB1010's switch jacks to the corresponding switch input on your amplifier or other device.

Operating Instructions

1. Basic Operation

The FCB1010 is organized into 10 banks, each containing 10 presets (0-9). To select a bank, use the UP and DOWN footswitches. Once a bank is selected, press one of the numbered footswitches (1-10) to activate the corresponding preset within that bank.

Figure 2: Close-up view of the two user-programmable expression pedals.

The two expression pedals are fully user-programmable. They can be assigned to control various MIDI parameters such as volume, wah, or other continuous controller (CC) messages. Each pedal's MIDI channel, controller number, and range can be customized to suit your specific needs. This allows for dynamic, real-time control over your sound.

3. Programming Presets

The FCB1010 allows for extensive programming of its presets. Each preset can transmit up to five MIDI Program Change commands and two MIDI Controller commands simultaneously. Additionally, MIDI Note commands can be sent for trigger or tap-tempo applications.

Programming can be done directly on the unit. While the process may require some initial learning, the design allows for programming even while standing, making adjustments convenient during live performances or studio sessions. Refer to the detailed programming section in the full user manual for step-by-step instructions on editing presets, assigning expression pedal functions, and configuring relay switches.

For advanced programming and easier configuration, third-party software tools are available that can simplify the process when connected to a computer via a MIDI-to-USB interface. These tools often provide a graphical user interface for intuitive setup.

Maintenance

The Behringer FCB1010 is built with a rugged enclosure designed for durability. To ensure its longevity and optimal performance, follow these general maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, but ensure no liquid enters the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the FCB1010 in a dry, dust-free environment. If transporting, use a protective case to prevent physical damage.
  • Environmental Conditions: Avoid exposing the unit to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Cable Management: Ensure all cables (power, MIDI, analog) are connected securely and are not under undue strain. Regularly check cables for wear and tear.

No user-serviceable parts are inside the unit. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your FCB1010. If you experience problems not covered here, please consult the full user manual or contact Behringer support.

1. Unit Does Not Power On

  • Check Power Cable: Ensure the power cable is securely connected to both the FCB1010 and a working AC outlet.
  • Test Outlet: Verify that the power outlet is functional by plugging in another device.
  • Internal Damage: If the unit was dropped or shows signs of physical damage, internal components may be affected. In such cases, professional repair is recommended.

2. MIDI Commands Not Being Sent/Received

  • MIDI Cable Connection: Ensure MIDI cables are correctly connected (OUT to IN, IN to OUT).
  • MIDI Channel Mismatch: Verify that the MIDI channel settings on the FCB1010 match those of the receiving device.
  • Device Compatibility: Confirm that the receiving device is configured to respond to the specific MIDI Program Change, Control Change, or Note messages being sent by the FCB1010.
  • Software Configuration: If using with computer software (e.g., DAWs, virtual instruments), ensure the software's MIDI input settings are correctly configured to recognize the FCB1010.
  • Programming Errors: Incorrect programming of presets or expression pedals can lead to unexpected behavior. Double-check your programmed settings, especially MIDI CC numbers and ranges.

3. Expression Pedals Not Functioning Correctly

  • Calibration: The expression pedals may require calibration. Refer to the full user manual for instructions on how to calibrate the pedals to ensure their full range of motion is recognized.
  • MIDI Assignment: Verify that the expression pedals are correctly assigned to the desired MIDI CC numbers and channels within the active preset.
  • Physical Obstruction: Check for any physical obstructions preventing the pedals from moving freely through their full range.
