  3. Initial Rinse Cycle:
    • Fill the water reservoir with fresh, cold water up to the 10-cup mark.
    • Place the empty filter holder into its position. Do not add coffee grounds.
    • Place the thermal carafe with its lid on the base.
    • Plug the coffee maker into a suitable electrical outlet.

5. Operating (Brewing Coffee)

Follow these steps to brew a fresh pot of coffee:

  1. Fill Water Reservoir: Open the water reservoir lid and fill with fresh, cold water to your desired level, using the magnified water-level indicator as a guide. Do not exceed the 10-cup maximum fill line.
  2. Add Coffee Grounds: Swing out the filter holder. Place a #6 cone-style paper filter (or a permanent filter, if using) into the holder. Add your desired amount of ground coffee. A general guideline is one tablespoon of coffee per cup, adjusted to personal preference. Close the filter holder securely.
  3. Position Carafe: Ensure the thermal carafe, with its lid properly attached, is placed firmly on the coffee maker's base.
  4. Start Brewing: Press the "On/Off" button. The brewing process will begin. The LCD display will indicate that brewing is in progress.
  5. Pause-and-Serve: The coffee maker features a pause-and-serve function, allowing you to temporarily remove the carafe to pour a cup before the brewing cycle is complete. Replace the carafe within 20 seconds to prevent overflow.
  6. Brewing Complete: An audible signal will indicate when brewing is complete. The coffee maker will automatically shut off after brewing.

7. Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your coffee maker.

Daily Cleaning:

  • Always unplug the coffee maker before cleaning.
  • Remove the filter holder and discard the used coffee filter and grounds. Wash the filter holder and thermal carafe (and its lid) in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. These parts are not dishwasher safe.
  • Wipe the exterior surfaces of the coffee maker with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
  • Do not immerse the coffee maker base, cord, or plug in water or any other liquid.

Descaling:

Mineral deposits (lime scale) can build up in your coffee maker over time, affecting performance and coffee taste. Your KRUPS FMF5 features an automatic electronic de-scaling indicator that measures brew time and calculates when descaling is necessary.

  • When the descaling indicator illuminates, it is time to descale the appliance.
  • Descaling Solution: You can use a commercial descaling agent specifically designed for coffee makers, or a solution of white vinegar and water (e.g., 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water).
  • Process:
    • Fill the water reservoir with the descaling solution up to the 10-cup mark.
    • Place an empty paper filter in the filter holder.
    • Place the empty thermal carafe on the base.
    • Start a brewing cycle. Allow half of the solution to brew through, then turn off the coffee maker and let it stand for 15-20 minutes to allow the solution to work.
    • Turn the coffee maker back on and allow the remaining solution to brew through.
    • Discard the solution from the carafe.
    • Run at least two full cycles with fresh, cold water only to rinse the coffee maker thoroughly.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your coffee maker, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Coffee does not brew. Coffee maker not plugged in; power outage; "On/Off" button not pressed; water reservoir empty. Ensure power cord is securely plugged in. Check circuit breaker. Press "On/Off" button. Fill water reservoir.
Coffee is too weak. Not enough coffee grounds; coffee grounds too coarse; Aroma switch not activated for small batches. Increase amount of coffee grounds. Use finer grind. Activate Aroma switch for 1-3 cups.
Coffee overflows from filter holder. Too many coffee grounds; filter not properly seated; carafe not correctly positioned; pause-and-serve exceeded. Reduce coffee grounds. Ensure filter is correctly seated. Place carafe firmly on base. Do not remove carafe for more than 20 seconds during brewing.
Coffee tastes bad. Old coffee grounds; dirty coffee maker; poor water quality; descaling needed. Use fresh coffee. Clean coffee maker thoroughly. Use filtered water. Perform descaling if indicator is on.
Electronic display issues. Temporary electrical glitch. Unplug the unit for a few minutes, then plug it back in. If issues persist, contact customer support.
