4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent damage to your records and equipment. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified technician.

4.1 Mounting the Cartridge

Carefully attach the cartridge to your turntable's headshell using the provided nuts and bolts. Ensure the cartridge is securely fastened but do not overtighten. The Super OM 10 features a low mass design, which is beneficial for many tonearms.

4.2 Connecting Wires

Connect the four color-coded wires from the tonearm to the corresponding pins on the cartridge. Use a small pair of pliers or tweezers if necessary, but be gentle to avoid damaging the pins or wires.

4.3 Cartridge Alignment

Accurate alignment is critical for proper tracking and sound quality. Use a cartridge alignment protractor to ensure the stylus is correctly positioned in the record groove. Adjust the cartridge position in the headshell until the stylus aligns with the protractor's reference points.

4.4 Tracking Force Adjustment

Set the tracking force on your tonearm to the recommended value. For the Ortofon Super OM 10, the recommended tracking force is 1.5 grams. Use a digital tracking force gauge for precise adjustment.

4.5 Anti-Skating Adjustment

Adjust the anti-skating setting on your tonearm to match the tracking force. This helps to balance the forces acting on the stylus, ensuring even wear and optimal stereo separation.

5. Operation

5.1 Playing a Record

Once installed and adjusted, carefully lower the tonearm onto the record. The Ortofon Super OM 10 features a 'cut-out' nose design, which aids in accurate cueing by providing a clear view of the stylus tip as it approaches the record groove.

Ensure the record is clean and free of dust before playing to minimize noise and stylus wear.

5.2 Stylus Care During Playback

Always use the tonearm lift mechanism to raise and lower the stylus. Avoid dropping the tonearm manually, as this can damage the stylus or record.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Stylus Cleaning

Regularly clean the stylus tip to remove dust and debris. Use a soft stylus brush, brushing gently from back to front (in the direction of the record groove). Do not use excessive force or brush from side to side.

6.2 Stylus Replacement

The stylus of the Ortofon Super OM 10 is easily replaceable. Over time, the stylus will wear out, affecting sound quality and potentially damaging records. Replace the stylus after approximately 1000 hours of playback, or sooner if you notice a degradation in sound or visible wear.

To replace, gently pull the old stylus assembly forward and off the cartridge body. Align the new stylus assembly and push it firmly onto the cartridge body until it clicks into place. The Super OM cartridge body is compatible with other styli in the OM series, such as OM 20, OM 30, and OM 40, allowing for future upgrades.
