Instruction Manual

1. Product Overview

The OEMTOOLS 25352 Ramp Style Spark Plug Gap Gauge is a precision tool designed for accurately measuring and adjusting the gap on spark plugs. This durable gauge features both SAE and metric measurements, ensuring versatility for various applications. Its compact design includes a convenient hole for attachment to a keychain, making it easily accessible whenever needed.

The tool's measurement range spans from 0.020 inch (0.50 mm) to 1 inch (2.5 mm), with clearly stamped markings for easy readability. Beyond measurement, it also functions as an electrode adjuster, allowing users to widen or narrow the spark plug gap as required.

2. Setup

The OEMTOOLS 25352 Ramp Style Spark Plug Gap Gauge requires no assembly. It is ready for immediate use upon removal from its packaging. Ensure the tool is clean and free of any debris or oil before use to maintain accuracy.

3. Operating Instructions

This tool allows for both measuring and adjusting spark plug gaps.

3.1. Measuring the Spark Plug Gap

  1. Identify the required spark plug gap specification for your vehicle or equipment. This information is typically found in the owner's manual or service guide.
  2. Locate the spark plug to be measured. Ensure the spark plug is clean and free of carbon buildup or debris that could affect the reading.
  3. Insert the edge of the ramp-style gauge into the spark plug gap, between the center electrode and the ground electrode.
  4. Gently slide the gauge until it makes contact with both electrodes. Do not force the gauge, as this can damage the spark plug or provide an inaccurate reading.
  5. Read the measurement indicated on the gauge at the point where it snugly fits the gap. The front of the gauge displays SAE (inch) measurements, while the back displays metric (mm) measurements.

3.2. Adjusting the Spark Plug Gap

The OEMTOOLS 25352 can also be used to adjust the spark plug gap if it does not match the required specification.

  • To Widen the Gap: If the gap is too small, use the small hole located at the top of the gauge. Insert the ground electrode of the spark plug into this hole and gently pull upwards to slightly bend the ground electrode, increasing the gap. Adjust incrementally and re-measure.
  • To Narrow the Gap: If the gap is too wide, gently press the ground electrode against a firm, flat surface or against the body of the gap gauge itself. Apply light pressure to carefully bend the ground electrode inwards, decreasing the gap. Adjust incrementally and re-measure.

Always re-measure the gap after any adjustment to ensure it meets the manufacturer's specifications.

3.3. Keychain Attachment

The small hole at the top of the gauge also serves as an attachment point for a keychain. This allows for convenient storage and ensures the tool is always at hand when needed.

4. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe the gauge clean with a dry cloth to remove any oil, grease, or carbon residue. This helps maintain accuracy and prevents corrosion.
  • Storage: Store the spark plug gap gauge in a dry place to prevent rust. The keychain hole allows for easy hanging or attachment to other tools.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the gauge for any signs of wear, bending, or damage that could affect its accuracy. Replace the tool if it appears compromised.

5. Troubleshooting

  • Inaccurate Readings: Ensure the spark plug and the gauge are clean. Debris or carbon buildup can lead to incorrect measurements. Also, verify that the gauge is inserted correctly and not forced.
  • Difficulty Adjusting Gap: Apply gentle, incremental pressure when adjusting the gap. Excessive force can damage the spark plug electrode. If the electrode is severely bent or damaged, replace the spark plug.
  • Readings are Faint: The markings on the gauge are stamped. If they become difficult to read due to dirt or wear, clean the surface thoroughly.
