The National Hardware N178-384 Pushbutton Latch is designed for use with wood or metal screen and storm doors. This latch features a dual locking design, incorporating both an exterior key lock and a separate interior locking mechanism for enhanced security. It is suitable for doors with 1-3/4 inch hole spacing and accommodates wood doors ranging from 5/8 inch to 2 inches thick. Mounting screws are included to match the product finish, along with a spring-loaded strike plate.
For 2-inch thick doors, two pan head machine screws (8/32 inch x 2-3/8 inch) are required and must be purchased separately. The latch uses a Y11 (SKU 202435) key blank.

Installation Instructions
- Prepare the Door: Ensure your wood or metal screen/storm door has 1-3/4 inch hole spacing. The latch is compatible with wood doors from 5/8 inch to 2 inches thick.
- Check Door Thickness: If your door is 2 inches thick, acquire two pan head machine screws (8/32 inch x 2-3/8 inch) separately, as these are not included with the standard package.
- Position the Latch: Align the exterior and interior components of the pushbutton latch with the pre-drilled holes on your door.
- Secure the Latch: Use the included mounting screws to firmly attach both the exterior and interior parts of the latch to the door. Ensure screws are tightened securely but do not overtighten.
- Install the Strike Plate: Position the spring-loaded strike plate on the door frame, aligning it with the latch mechanism. Mark the screw holes.
- Attach Strike Plate: Secure the strike plate to the door frame using the provided screws. Test the latch operation to ensure smooth engagement with the strike plate. Adjust if necessary.

Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and smooth operation of your pushbutton latch, perform the following maintenance:
- Cleaning: Periodically clean the latch with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
- Lubrication: Apply a small amount of graphite lubricant or a silicone-based spray to the moving parts of the latch and the key cylinder annually to prevent sticking and ensure smooth operation.
- Tighten Screws: Check all mounting screws periodically and tighten them if they have become loose.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your pushbutton latch, consider the following common solutions:
- Latch Not Engaging:
- Check if the strike plate is properly aligned with the latch bolt. Adjust the strike plate position if necessary.
- Ensure no debris is obstructing the latch mechanism or strike plate opening.
- Key Sticking or Hard to Turn:
- Apply graphite lubricant to the key and insert it into the cylinder several times.
- Ensure the key is fully inserted and is the correct Y11 key blank.
- Loose Handle:
- Tighten all visible mounting screws on both the interior and exterior handles.
