2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when towing. Ensure all connections are secure and follow your towed vehicle's owner's manual for specific flat towing procedures. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Maximum Capacity: This tow bar is rated for vehicles up to 5,000 lbs. Do not exceed this weight limit.
  • Vehicle Compatibility: Ensure your towed vehicle is approved for flat towing by its manufacturer.
  • Level Towing: The height difference between the towing vehicle's receiver and the towed vehicle's base plate attachment points should be within 3 inches. An adapter may be required to achieve this.
  • Parking: Always ensure both vehicles are in park and on a level surface when hooking up or unhooking the tow bar.
  • Safety Chains: Always use safety chains in a crossing pattern underneath the tow bar.
  • Braking System: A supplemental braking system for the towed vehicle is highly recommended and often legally required.

3. Setup

3.1 Pre-Installation Checks

  1. Measure Heights: Measure the distance from the ground to the center of the receiver tube on your towing vehicle and the distance from the ground to the center of the mounting tabs on your towed vehicle. The height difference should not exceed 3 inches.
  2. Adapter: If the height difference is greater than 3 inches, an appropriate adapter (drop receiver) will be needed.

3.2 Attaching the Tow Bar to the Towing Vehicle

  1. Insert Tow Bar: Insert the tow bar shank into the receiver tube of your towing vehicle. The BX4330 model offers multiple pin positions; use the shortest position whenever possible.
  2. Secure Tow Bar: Secure the tow bar in place using the provided hitch pin and clip.

3.3 Connecting the Towed Vehicle

  1. Position Towed Vehicle: Position the towed vehicle squarely behind the towing vehicle, ensuring both are in park on a level surface.
  2. Unfold Arms: Unfold the tow bar arms from the stowed position.
  3. Connect Attachment Tabs: Insert the tow bar attachment tabs into the base plate of your towed vehicle. Secure each tab with its respective pin and clip. Ensure the lynchpin is correctly oriented and closes completely.
  4. Extend Arms: While lifting the latch handle, extend the arm, aligning the lugs on the tow bar with the vehicle attachment tabs. Secure in place with the supplied half-inch pin and lynchpin. Repeat for the other arm.
  5. Safety Chains: Attach the included safety chains in a crossing pattern underneath the tow bar. Connect them to a solid part of the chassis on the towing vehicle and to the base plate convenience link on the towed vehicle. Verify cable hooks are fully seated and safety springs are closed.
  6. Electrical & Breakaway: Connect your electrical cable and emergency breakaway cable.
  7. Vehicle Setup: Follow your towed vehicle's owner's manual for all steps needed for flat towing (e.g., disengage parking brake, set transmission for towing, unlock steering wheel).

4. Operating

  1. Engage Locking Handles: Pull the towing vehicle forward until one or both of the locking handles on the tow bar arms are engaged. The handles will snap down to a vertical position when they are locked.
  2. Verify Locks: If only one locking handle is engaged, turn the towing vehicle towards the locked tow bar arm while driving forward until the remaining handle locks into place. Verify that both handles are in the locked position prior to towing.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your tow bar.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the entire surface of the tow bar with a mild soap and water solution.
  • Drying: Wipe dry with a clean cloth after cleaning.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect all components for wear, damage, or corrosion. Replace any worn or damaged parts immediately.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Pin Stuck During Disconnection

If you encounter difficulty removing the pins during disconnection, it may be due to tension on the tow bar arms.

  • Solution: Gently nudge the towed vehicle forward or backward to relieve pressure on the pins. This should allow for easier removal.
