Operating Instructions

1. Pressurizing the Fuel Bottle

With the fuel pump securely attached, pump the plunger approximately 20-30 times to build sufficient pressure in the fuel bottle. This pressure is essential for proper stove operation.

2. Preheating the Stove

Open the pump control valve briefly (about 1/2 turn) to allow a small amount of fuel to flow into the priming cup beneath the burner. Close the valve. Light the fuel in the priming cup. Allow it to burn until the flame is nearly out (approximately 30-60 seconds). This preheats the generator tube, vaporizing the liquid fuel for a clean, blue flame.

3. Lighting the Stove

Once the preheat flame is almost gone, slowly open the pump control valve. The stove should ignite with a steady blue flame. If the flame is yellow or sputtering, allow more preheating time or pump the bottle a few more times.

4. Adjusting the Flame

Use the pump control valve to adjust the flame intensity. Turn clockwise to decrease the flame and counter-clockwise to increase it. For optimal performance, aim for a steady blue flame.

5. Turning Off the Stove

To turn off the stove, close the pump control valve completely. Allow the flame to extinguish naturally. Once the stove has cooled, depressurize the fuel bottle by slowly unscrewing the pump a half-turn until you hear the pressure release. Re-tighten the pump.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your WhisperLite stove. The stove features Shaker Jet technology for easy cleaning of the fuel jet in the field. Simply shake the stove vigorously to clear any clogs.

The included small-parts kit contains essential components for field repairs, such as O-rings and a cleaning wire. Refer to the detailed instructions in the provided manual for specific maintenance procedures.

Troubleshooting

  • Stove not lighting or weak flame: Ensure the fuel bottle is adequately pressurized. Check for clogs in the fuel line or jet; use the Shaker Jet technology or cleaning wire to clear. Verify the fuel pump is properly assembled and sealed.
  • Difficulty with simmering: Liquid fuel stoves like the WhisperLite are known for powerful heat output. Achieving a very low simmer can be challenging. Practice flame adjustment with the control valve to find the lowest stable setting.
  • Fuel leaks: Check all connections for tightness. Inspect O-rings on the fuel pump and fuel line for wear or damage. Replace if necessary using the small-parts kit.
  • Pump issues: If the pump plunger feels loose or doesn't build pressure, the pump cup might be dry or damaged. Apply MSR pump cup oil (included in the small-parts kit) to the pump cup to restore pliability and seal. If damaged, replace the pump cup.
