Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens Instruction Manual

For Canon EOS SLR Cameras

1. Product Overview

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens is a versatile standard zoom lens designed for Canon EOS SLR cameras. It offers a broad focal length range from 24mm wide-angle to 105mm portrait-length telephoto, making it suitable for various photographic situations. This lens incorporates Image Stabilizer Technology to reduce camera shake and features one Super-UD glass element and three aspherical lenses to minimize chromatic aberration and distortion, ensuring high image quality. The ring-type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) system provides silent and fast autofocus, complemented by full-time manual focus capability. Its dust- and moisture-resistant construction ensures durability for demanding environments.

2. Key Features

3. Setup

3.1 Attaching the Lens to a Camera

Align the red index mark on the lens with the red index mark on your Canon EOS SLR camera body. Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks into place. Ensure the lens is securely mounted before use. For non-Canon camera bodies, a compatible adapter (e.g., for Sony E-mount) is required. Align the adapter to the lens first, then mount the combined unit to the camera body following the adapter's instructions.

3.2 Attaching Filters

The lens features a 77mm filter thread. To attach a filter, gently screw it onto the front of the lens in a clockwise direction until it is snug. Do not overtighten. A UV filter is recommended for lens protection against dust and scratches.

4. Operating the Lens

4.1 Autofocus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF)

The lens is equipped with a switch to select between Autofocus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF) modes. For automatic focusing, set the switch to 'AF'. For precise manual control, set the switch to 'MF' and rotate the focusing ring. The ring-type USM ensures fast and quiet AF operation, and full-time manual focus allows for fine adjustments even in AF mode.

4.2 Image Stabilizer (IS)

The Image Stabilizer (IS) function helps to reduce blur caused by camera shake, especially in low light conditions or when shooting at longer focal lengths. Use the 'STABILIZER ON/OFF' switch to activate or deactivate the image stabilization. It is recommended to turn off the IS when using a tripod to prevent potential interference.

4.3 Zooming

To change the focal length, rotate the zoom ring on the lens. The lens covers a versatile range from 24mm (wide-angle) to 105mm (telephoto), allowing for diverse compositions without changing lenses.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Lens

Regularly clean the lens elements with a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. Use a lens blower to remove dust particles before wiping. Avoid touching the glass elements directly with your fingers. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid on the cloth, not directly on the lens.

5.2 Storage

When not in use, attach both the front and rear lens caps to protect the lens elements and mount. Store the lens in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. The dust- and moisture-resistant construction helps protect the internal components, but proper storage is crucial for longevity.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Autofocus Performance Issues

If autofocus seems slow or inaccurate, ensure the AF/MF switch is set to 'AF'. In very low light or with subjects lacking contrast, autofocus may struggle. Consider switching to manual focus or using an external light source. When using the lens with an adapter on a non-native camera body, autofocus performance may vary and might not be as fast as with a native Canon body.

6.2 Noise from Image Stabilizer or Autofocus

It is normal for the Image Stabilizer and Autofocus mechanisms to produce faint operational sounds. These sounds are typically minimal and do not affect performance. However, if recording video with an on-camera microphone, these sounds might be picked up. For critical audio recording, consider using an external microphone placed away from the lens or switching to manual focus and disabling the Image Stabilizer if possible.
