Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use and maintenance of your Johnson Level & Tool 40-6700 Red Beam Laser Detector. Please read this manual thoroughly before operation to ensure safe and efficient use of the device.
Product Overview
The Johnson 40-6700 is a one-sided laser detector designed for use with red beam rotary lasers. It is particularly useful in outdoor environments, high ambient light conditions, or whenever the laser beam is not visible to the naked eye. The detector quickly and accurately identifies the laser signal, providing visual and audible feedback for precise leveling tasks.

Operating Instructions
1. Powering On/Off
Press the power button (usually marked with a power symbol) to turn the detector on or off. The back-lit LCD display will illuminate upon activation.
2. Detecting the Laser Beam
Position the detector in the path of the red beam rotary laser. The detector will emit audible tones and display visual indicators on its LCD screen to guide you to the laser beam's exact location.
3. Interpreting Indicators
- Visual Indicators: The LCD display features an EZ-Read™ interface that shows arrows indicating whether the detector needs to move up or down to align with the laser beam. A solid line or specific symbol indicates that the detector is precisely on grade.
- Audible Indicators: The detector emits different tones to indicate its position relative to the laser beam. A continuous tone typically signifies that the detector is on grade, while intermittent tones indicate it is above or below grade.

4. Adjusting Sensitivity
The detector may feature fine/coarse detection settings. Refer to the buttons on the device to switch between these modes. Coarse mode is useful for initial beam acquisition, while fine mode provides greater precision for final adjustments.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Regularly clean the detector's housing and display with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the device. Ensure the sensor window is clean for optimal performance.
Storage
When not in use, store the laser detector in its original packaging or a protective case in a dry environment. Remove the 9V battery if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent battery leakage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Detector does not power on. | Dead or incorrectly installed battery. | Replace the 9V battery or ensure it is installed with correct polarity. |
| No laser beam detected. | Laser not active, detector out of range, or sensor obstructed. | Ensure the rotary laser is on and emitting a red beam. Move closer to the laser. Clean the detector's sensor window. |
| Inaccurate readings. | Sensor obstruction, incorrect sensitivity setting, or environmental interference. | Clean the sensor. Switch to fine detection mode. Minimize strong light sources directly hitting the sensor. |
