4.3 Leak Testing

Before first use and after every tank change, perform a leak test:

  1. Mix a solution of soapy water (50% soap, 50% water).
  2. Ensure the heater's control knob is OFF.
  3. Open the propane tank valve.
  4. Apply the soapy solution to all gas connections. If bubbles appear, there is a leak. Tighten connections or replace parts as necessary. Do not operate the heater if a leak is detected.

5. Operating Instructions

This section details how to safely ignite and operate your Hiland patio heater.

5.1 Ignition Procedure

It is recommended to perform the initial ignition in low light conditions to clearly see the pilot flame.

  1. Ensure the propane tank valve is fully open.
  2. Push in the control knob and rotate it counter-clockwise to the "PILOT" position.
  3. While holding the knob in, press the red igniter button repeatedly until the pilot flame ignites. You may need to press it multiple times (up to 15-20 times) until you hear a click and see the pilot light.
  4. Once the pilot is lit, continue to hold the control knob in for at least 15-20 seconds. This allows the thermocouple to heat up and engage the safety valve. Releasing too soon will cause the pilot to extinguish.
  5. After holding, slowly release the control knob. The pilot flame should remain lit. If it extinguishes, repeat steps 2-4.
  6. To ignite the main burner, push in the control knob and rotate it further counter-clockwise to the "LOW" or "HIGH" position. The main burner should ignite.

5.2 Adjusting Heat Output

Rotate the control knob between "LOW" and "HIGH" to adjust the heat intensity as desired. The heater provides up to 11,000 BTUs of heat.

5.3 Shutting Down the Heater

  1. Rotate the control knob clockwise to the "OFF" position.
  2. Close the valve on the propane tank.
  3. Allow the heater to cool completely before moving or storing.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures safe and efficient operation of your heater.

  • Cleaning: Wipe exterior surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the burner screen is free of debris.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, disconnect the propane tank and store the heater in a dry, protected area.
  • Inspections: Periodically check all gas connections and the hose for signs of wear, damage, or leaks.
