2. Safety Information
WARNING: For outdoor use only. Do not operate this appliance indoors. Read all instructions before use.
- Always operate the stove on a stable, level, non-combustible surface.
- Keep the propane cylinder at least 24 inches away from the burner.
- Ensure adequate ventilation.
- Never leave the operating stove unattended.
- Keep children and pets away from the stove during operation.
- Wear appropriate protective gear, such as long sleeves, long pants, and heat-resistant gloves, when handling hot oil or components.
- Check all gas connections for leaks before each use using a soapy water solution.
3. Setup
3.1 Unpacking and Assembly
The Bayou Classic SQ14 stove typically comes pre-assembled, requiring minimal setup. Carefully remove all packaging materials. The propane hose and regulator assembly will need to be connected.
- Remove any protective caps or coverings from the gas inlet on the burner and the hose connector.
- Attach the braided stainless steel LPG hose to the burner's gas inlet. Hand-tighten securely.
- Connect the regulator end of the hose to your propane cylinder. Ensure a tight connection.

3.2 Initial Burn-Off
It is recommended to perform an initial burn-off to eliminate any manufacturing residues or paint fumes. Operate the burner at a high flame for approximately 15-20 minutes before first use with cookware. This should be done outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
3.3 Air Shutter Adjustment
The burner features an adjustable air shutter to optimize the flame. A proper flame should be predominantly blue. If the flame is yellow or orange, adjust the air shutter until a strong blue flame is achieved.
Video 1: This video demonstrates the operation of a Bayou Classic Dual Jet Cooker (model SP2), which shares similar burner adjustment principles with the SQ14. It shows the flame being ignited and adjusted.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Lighting the Burner
- Ensure all connections are secure and the propane tank valve is closed.
- Slowly open the main valve on the propane tank.
- Using an extended lighter or match, position the flame near the burner head.
- Slowly open the regulator valve on the hose until the burner ignites.
- Adjust the flame to the desired intensity using the regulator valve and the air shutter.

4.2 Flame Adjustment
The 5-psi adjustable regulator allows for precise control over the flame intensity, from a bare simmer to a powerful blast. Fine-tune the flame by rotating the regulator knob. For optimal heat and efficiency, ensure the flame remains blue. If a yellow flame appears, adjust the air shutter as described in Section 3.3.
4.3 Suitable Cookware
The square frame design and sturdy construction are suitable for stockpots ranging from 12-inch diameter up to 30-quart capacity. It can accommodate various cookware types, including fryers, steamers, cast iron cookware, and griddles.

5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
Allow the stove to cool completely before cleaning. Wipe down the welded frame with a damp cloth. For stubborn grease or food residues, use a mild detergent and a non-abrasive sponge. Ensure the burner head is free from debris for optimal performance.
5.2 Storage
After each use, disconnect the propane cylinder and store the stove in a dry, protected area to prevent rust and damage. Ensure the hose and regulator are free from kinks or damage before storage.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow/Orange Flame | Improper air-fuel mixture (too little air) | Adjust the air shutter to allow more air into the burner. |
| No Gas Flow / Low Flame (after tank change) | Regulator safety feature activated (excess flow valve) | Completely close the regulator valve and the propane tank valve. Wait 30 seconds, then slowly open the propane tank valve fully, followed by slowly opening the regulator valve. |
| Burner does not light | No gas, clogged burner, faulty igniter (if applicable) | Check propane tank level. Clear any obstructions from the burner ports. Ensure gas is flowing correctly. |
