Operating the Camera
1. Basic Photography Modes
The D50 features an exposure mode dial with scene-optimized Digital Vari-Program modes. Rotate the dial to select a mode:
- Auto: For general photography, the camera automatically adjusts settings.
- Programmed Auto (P): Camera sets shutter speed and aperture for optimal exposure.
- Shutter-Priority Auto (S): You choose shutter speed, camera sets aperture.
- Aperture-Priority Auto (A): You choose aperture, camera sets shutter speed.
- Manual (M): You control both shutter speed and aperture.
- Scene Modes: Includes Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close Up, and Night Portrait for specific shooting scenarios.
2. Autofocus System
The D50 utilizes a 5-area autofocus system with a cross-type center sensor. The AF-A mode automatically switches between single-servo (AF-S) for stationary subjects and continuous-servo (AF-C) for moving subjects. An AF-assist illuminator aids focusing in low light.
3. Exposure Control
The camera employs Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering II for accurate exposure. Shutter speeds range from 30 seconds to 1/4000 second, with a bulb setting for longer exposures. ISO sensitivity can be set manually or automatically from 200 to 1600.
4. White Balance
The D50 offers advanced auto white balance, six specific manual settings, white balance bracketing, and a preset option for custom calibration.
5. Continuous Shooting
Capture fast-moving action with continuous shooting at 2.5 frames per second for bursts of up to 137 pictures.
6. Flash Usage
The built-in flash supports various modes including Auto, On, Off, Slow Synch, and Rear Curtain Synch. High-speed flash sync up to 1/500 second is available.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the camera body.
- For the lens and LCD screen, use a specialized lens cleaning cloth and solution. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Use a blower brush to remove dust from the lens and sensor (if accessible and you are comfortable doing so).
2. Battery Care
- Charge the battery fully before each use.
- Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Avoid exposing the battery to extreme temperatures.
3. Storage
When not in use, store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in a camera bag or case to protect it from impacts and moisture.
Troubleshooting
- Camera does not power on: Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted. Check if the battery contacts are clean.
- Images are blurry: Verify that the lens is clean and properly attached. Check focus mode settings (AF-S/AF-C) and ensure sufficient light for autofocus.
- Memory card error: Ensure the SD card is correctly inserted and not full. Try formatting the card (this will erase all data).
- Flash not firing: Check flash mode settings. Ensure the flash is popped up if using the built-in flash.
- Poor image quality: Review ISO settings (high ISO can introduce noise), white balance, and exposure compensation.
