1. Product Overview
The Mighty Mule FM502 is an automatic gate opener designed for heavy-duty dual swing gates. This system is suitable for gates up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) long or 850 pounds (385.5 kg) per gate leaf. It features a 12V battery backup for power failure and is solar compatible. 2. Installation
The FM502 gate opener is designed for straightforward do-it-yourself installation. A detailed manual and an installation video are provided to guide you through the process. No welding or specialized electrical work is typically required.

2.2 Mounting and Wiring
Ensure the gate swings evenly and is freely hung and plumb before installation. The system uses bolt-on mounting hardware. The control box should be mounted in a suitable location, and power cables routed as per the diagram. A 120-volt indoor transformer is included for charging the battery. An optional solar panel (FM123) can be used for charging.

3. Operation
The FM502 system allows for convenient gate operation using the included remote entry transmitter. The system is powered by a 12-volt DC low-voltage system, with a battery backup to ensure functionality during power outages.
3.1 Opening and Closing
- Press the button on the remote transmitter to activate the gate opener.
- The gate will perform a soft start, open, and then soft stop.
- The adjustable auto-close feature can be set to automatically close the gate after a period of 0 to 120 seconds.

3.2 Safety Features
- Obstruction Sensing: The system includes UL-approved obstruction sensing. If the gate encounters an obstruction during operation, it will stop or reverse to prevent damage or injury.
- Soft Start/Soft Stop: This feature reduces wear and tear on the gate and opener components by gradually increasing and decreasing speed at the beginning and end of each cycle.
- Battery Backup: The 12V battery ensures the gate remains operational during power failures.

4. Maintenance
Regular inspection and basic maintenance will ensure the longevity and reliable operation of your Mighty Mule FM502 gate opener.
- Gate Condition: Periodically check that the gate swings freely and is not binding. Lubricate hinges if necessary.
- Mounting Hardware: Inspect all mounting hardware for tightness and signs of wear. Tighten any loose bolts.
- Battery: The 12V battery is continuously charged by the AC transformer or optional solar panel. Ensure the charging system is functioning correctly. For dual applications or solar setups, a second battery is recommended for optimal performance.
- Obstruction Sensors: Keep the area around the gate path clear of debris to ensure obstruction sensors function properly.
- Wiring: Check all wiring connections for corrosion or damage.
5. Troubleshooting

- Gate Not Opening/Closing:

- This may indicate an obstruction. Clear the gate path and test again.
- Check obstruction sensor settings; they might be too sensitive. - Unusual Noises:
- Inspect gate hinges and opener arms for binding or wear. Lubricate as needed.
- Ensure all mounting hardware is secure. - Gate Opens/Closes Partially:
- Check for low battery voltage. Ensure the charging system is working.
