Setup and Initial Use

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all packaging materials and inspect the heater for any damage.
  2. Placement: Place the heater on a level, non-combustible surface, away from walls, furniture, and drapes. Ensure at least 3 feet (0.9 meters) clearance from all combustible materials.
  3. Battery Installation: Open the battery compartment (usually located at the back or bottom) and insert the included batteries, observing correct polarity. These batteries power the automatic ignition.
  4. Fueling:
    • Ensure the heater is turned off and cool.
    • Remove the fuel tank.
    • Using the provided siphon pump, fill the tank with clean, K-1 grade kerosene only. Do not overfill; observe the fuel gauge.
    • Wipe up any spills immediately.
    • Securely replace the fuel tank.
  5. Wick Saturation: After fueling, allow at least 30 minutes for the wick to fully saturate with kerosene before attempting to ignite the heater. This prevents damage to the wick.

Operating Instructions

  1. Ignition:
    • Ensure the wick is fully saturated.
    • Push the "IGNITION-PUSH" button firmly. You should hear a clicking sound and see the wick ignite.
    • If the wick does not ignite, release the button and try again.
  2. Adjusting Heat Output:
    • Once ignited, use the "ADJUSTING RANGE" knob to raise or lower the wick, thereby controlling the heat output.
    • Adjust the wick to achieve a clean, even flame without excessive smoke or odor. A blue flame tip is ideal.
  3. Shutting Off:
    • To turn off the heater, push the "MANUAL SHUT-OFF" lever down. The flame will retract and extinguish.
    • Allow the heater to cool completely before moving or storing.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your heater.

  • Wick Maintenance:
    • Wick Cleaning: Periodically clean the wick by burning off carbon deposits. Operate the heater on a low setting until the fuel runs out. Allow it to cool, then gently brush off any carbon.
    • Wick Replacement: Replace the wick when it becomes too short to produce a proper flame or if it's heavily damaged. Refer to the wick replacement instructions provided with replacement wicks (e.g., Sengoku SP-KHW-055-I or compatible).
  • Fuel Tank Cleaning: Annually, or if fuel appears contaminated, drain and clean the fuel tank. Use only clean kerosene for rinsing.
  • General Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the heater with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: When storing the heater for extended periods, drain all kerosene from the tank and burn off any remaining fuel in the wick. Store in a dry, dust-free location.
