Shure UA221

Shure UA221 Passive Antenna Splitter/Combiner Kit User Manual

Model: UA221

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use and installation of the Shure UA221 Passive Antenna Splitter/Combiner Kit. The UA221 kit is designed to enhance the flexibility of wireless microphone systems by allowing a single antenna input to be split into two outputs, or two antenna inputs to be combined into a single output. This passive device is compatible with Shure UC4, SLX4, ULXS4, ULXP4, U4S, U4D, UR4S, and UR4D receivers.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand these safety instructions before using the Shure UA221 kit. Failure to follow these instructions may result in damage to the product or connected equipment.

  • Environmental Conditions: Do not expose the device to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Liquid Exposure: Keep the device away from liquids. Do not operate if wet.
  • Physical Damage: Avoid dropping or subjecting the device to severe impact.
  • Modifications: Do not attempt to modify or disassemble the device. Refer all servicing to qualified Shure personnel.
  • Proper Connection: Ensure all BNC connections are secure and correctly oriented to prevent signal loss or damage.

3. Package Contents

The Shure UA221 Passive Antenna Splitter/Combiner Kit includes the following items:

  • Two (2) Shure UA221 Passive Antenna Adapters

4. Setup

The UA221 adapters can be configured as either a splitter (one input, two outputs) or a combiner (two inputs, one output). Each kit contains two adapters, allowing for various configurations depending on your wireless system needs.

4.1. As an Antenna Splitter

  1. Connect the antenna cable from your primary antenna (e.g., a Shure UA874 active antenna) to one of the BNC connectors on the UA221 adapter. This will serve as your input.
  2. Connect two separate RF cables from the remaining two BNC connectors on the UA221 adapter to the antenna inputs of two compatible Shure receivers (e.g., SLX4, ULXP4).
  3. Ensure all connections are finger-tight to maintain signal integrity.

4.2. As an Antenna Combiner

  1. Connect two separate RF cables from the antenna outputs of two different antennas (e.g., two Shure UA8 antennas) to two BNC connectors on the UA221 adapter. These will serve as your inputs.
  2. Connect a single RF cable from the remaining BNC connector on the UA221 adapter to the antenna input of a compatible Shure receiver.
  3. Verify all connections are secure.

Note: As a passive device, the UA221 introduces a nominal signal loss. For systems requiring extended range or operating in challenging RF environments, consider active antenna distribution systems.

5. Operating

Once properly connected, the Shure UA221 operates passively, requiring no external power. It facilitates the distribution or combination of RF signals for your wireless microphone system. The performance of your wireless system will depend on the quality of your antennas, cables, and the RF environment.

  • Signal Integrity: The UA221 is designed to minimize signal degradation. However, any passive split or combination will inherently introduce some signal loss.
  • Impedance Matching: The UA221 maintains a 50 Ohm impedance, which is standard for professional wireless audio equipment. Ensure all connected components (antennas, cables, receivers) also operate at 50 Ohms for optimal performance.

6. Maintenance

The Shure UA221 is a robust device designed for reliability. Minimal maintenance is required.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the adapters. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Connection Check: Periodically inspect BNC connectors for any signs of wear, corrosion, or looseness. Ensure connections are secure before each use.
  • Storage: Store the adapters in a cool, dry place when not in use, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your wireless system while using the UA221, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Poor Signal Reception:
    • Verify all BNC connections are tight and correctly seated.
    • Check the condition of all RF cables for damage or kinks.
    • Ensure antennas are positioned correctly and have a clear line of sight to the transmitters.
    • Confirm that the UA221 is being used within its intended passive application. Significant signal loss may occur if used in scenarios requiring active amplification.
  • Interference:
    • Ensure all components are 50 Ohm impedance matched.
    • Check for other RF sources in the vicinity that might be causing interference.
  • No Signal:
    • Double-check all cable connections from antennas to the UA221 and from the UA221 to the receivers.
    • Test individual components (antennas, cables, receivers) without the UA221 to isolate the issue.

If problems persist, contact Shure customer support for further assistance.
