  • Multipurpose Heavy-Duty Design: Ideal for cutting materials such as drywall, roofing, flooring, rubber, and gasket materials.

2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when using any cutting tool. Improper use can result in serious injury.

  • Keep blades extremely sharp. Dull blades require more force and can slip, causing injury.
  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves.
  • Ensure the blade is fully retracted or securely locked when not in use.
  • Keep the knife out of reach of children and untrained individuals.
  • Cut away from your body and use a cutting mat or stable surface to prevent damage and ensure safety.
  • Dispose of used blade segments safely in a designated container.

3. Setup & Blade Adjustment

3.1 Extending and Retracting the Blade

  1. To extend the blade, loosen the ratchet wheel lock by rotating it counter-clockwise.
  2. Slide the blade slider forward to expose the desired length of the blade.
  3. To secure the blade, rotate the ratchet wheel lock clockwise until it is tight and the blade is firmly held in place.
  4. To retract the blade, loosen the ratchet wheel lock and slide the blade slider backward until the blade is fully enclosed within the handle. Tighten the lock for safe storage.

3.2 Snapping Off Dull Blade Segments

The OLFA L-1 knife features snap-off blade segments, allowing you to quickly obtain a fresh, sharp edge without a full blade change.

  1. Extend the blade until one dull segment is exposed.
  2. Use the integrated blade snapper tool located at the end of the knife handle (or a pair of pliers) to grip the dull segment.
  3. Snap the segment off cleanly. Dispose of the dull segment safely.
  4. Extend the blade to expose the next sharp segment and secure it with the ratchet lock.

3.3 Replacing the Entire Blade

When all segments of the blade are used, the entire blade needs to be replaced with a new OLFA 18mm blade (e.g., LB Heavy-Duty Silver Snap Blade).

  1. Ensure the blade is fully extended and the ratchet lock is loosened.
  2. Carefully pull the old blade completely out from the front of the knife.
  3. Insert a new OLFA 18mm blade into the stainless-steel channel, ensuring it slides smoothly.
  4. Slide the blade to the desired position and secure it with the ratchet lock.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 General Cutting Techniques

  • Always use a straight edge or guide for precise cuts.
  • Apply consistent, firm pressure. Multiple shallow passes are often safer and more effective than a single deep cut, especially on thick materials.
  • Ensure the material being cut is stable and will not shift during the cutting process.

4.2 Recommended Applications

The OLFA L-1 Utility Knife is designed for heavy-duty cutting tasks, including:

  • Drywall scoring and cutting.
  • Flooring materials (e.g., carpet, vinyl).
  • Roofing shingles.
  • Insulation.
  • Cardboard and other packaging materials.
  • Rubber and gasket materials.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Keep your OLFA L-1 knife clean to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

  • After each use, wipe down the blade and handle with a dry cloth to remove any debris or residue.
  • For stubborn grime, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by thorough drying.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the handle or blade.

5.2 Storage

Proper storage protects the knife and prevents accidental injury.

  • Always retract the blade fully into the handle and secure the ratchet lock before storing.
  • Store the knife in a dry place, away from moisture, to prevent rust on the blade.
  • Keep the knife in a toolbox, drawer, or on a pegboard, ensuring it is out of reach of children.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Blade Not Extending/Retracting Smoothly

  • Check for debris: Ensure no material is lodged in the blade channel. Clean as per maintenance instructions.
  • Ratchet lock: Verify the ratchet wheel lock is fully loosened before attempting to slide the blade.

6.2 Blade Feels Dull

  • Snap off segment: If available, snap off the dullest segment to expose a fresh, sharp edge.
  • Replace blade: If all segments are used or the blade is damaged, replace the entire blade.
