5. Installation
5.1. Tools Required
- Screwdriver (Phillips and/or Flathead)
- Wire Strippers
- Voltage Tester
- Electrical Tape (optional)
5.2. Pre-Installation Steps
- Turn off Power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that controls the power to the switch box. Turn it OFF.
- Verify Power is Off: Use a voltage tester to confirm that no power is present at the switch box before proceeding.
- Remove Old Switch: Carefully remove the wall plate and unscrew the existing switch from the electrical box. Disconnect the wires from the old switch, noting which wire was connected to which terminal.
5.3. Wiring Instructions for 3-Way Switch
A 3-way switch system involves two switches controlling one light fixture. This Leviton switch features both Quickwire Push-In terminals and traditional side-wired screw terminals.
Identify the following wires in your electrical box:
- Common Wire (Hot): This wire typically comes from the power source or goes directly to the light fixture. It is usually connected to a darker colored (often black) screw terminal on the old switch.
- Traveler Wires: These two wires connect the two 3-way switches. They are usually connected to lighter colored (often brass or silver) screw terminals on the old switch.
- Ground Wire: A bare copper or green insulated wire.
Wiring Steps:
- Connect Ground Wire: Connect the bare copper or green insulated ground wire from the electrical box to the green ground screw terminal on the new Leviton switch.
- Connect Common Wire: Connect the identified common wire to the single darker colored screw terminal (often black) on the new switch. Alternatively, use the corresponding Quickwire push-in terminal if available and appropriate for your wire gauge.
- Connect Traveler Wires: Connect the two traveler wires to the two lighter colored screw terminals (often brass or silver) on the new switch. Alternatively, use the corresponding Quickwire push-in terminals.
- Secure Connections: Ensure all screw terminals are tightened securely. If using Quickwire, ensure wires are fully inserted.

5.4. Mounting and Finishing
- Carefully fold the wires into the electrical box, ensuring no wires are pinched.
- Mount the switch to the electrical box using the provided screws.
- Attach the Decora wall plate (sold separately) over the switch.
- Restore Power: Turn the power back ON at the circuit breaker or fuse box.
6. Operation
The Leviton 3-Way Decora Rocker Wall Switch operates by pressing the top or bottom of the rocker paddle. Pressing the top of the paddle typically turns the connected light or device ON, while pressing the bottom turns it OFF. In a 3-way setup, the state of the light is controlled by the combined positions of both 3-way switches.
7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: To clean the switch, wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure power is off before cleaning.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the switch for any signs of damage or loose connections. If any issues are found, turn off power and consult a qualified electrician.
8. Troubleshooting
Problem: Light does not turn ON/OFF.
- No Power: Check the circuit breaker or fuse to ensure power is ON.
- Loose Connections: Turn off power and re-check all wire connections at the switch and the light fixture. Ensure the common wire is correctly identified and connected.
- Incorrect Wiring: Verify that the 3-way wiring configuration is correct. Consult a wiring diagram if unsure.
- Faulty Bulb/Fixture: Test the light fixture with a known working bulb or check the fixture itself.
- Defective Switch: If all other troubleshooting steps fail, the switch may be defective and require replacement.
