Rain Bird RSD Rain Sensor Instruction Manual

Model: RSD Rain Sensor

Introduction

The Rain Bird RSD Rain Sensor is designed to automatically shut off your irrigation system during wet conditions, preventing unnecessary watering and conserving water. This durable device is suitable for 24VAC residential and commercial irrigation systems.

Key Features:

  • Adjustable Rainfall Settings: Easily set rainfall thresholds from 1/8 inch to 3/4 inch with a simple twist of a dial.
  • Easy Installation: Designed for straightforward installation with 25 feet (7.6 m) of UV-resistant extension wire.
  • Durable Construction: Made from high-grade, UV-resistant polymer to withstand outdoor elements.
  • Compatibility: Works with most 24VAC irrigation controllers.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation ensures optimal performance of your Rain Bird RSD Rain Sensor. Follow these steps carefully.

1. Choosing a Location:

Select an outdoor location that is exposed to unobstructed rainfall. Avoid areas under eaves, trees, or other overhangs that could block rain from reaching the sensor. The sensor should be mounted vertically.

2. Mounting the Sensor:

Use the provided mounting bracket to securely attach the sensor to a gutter, fence, or wall. Ensure the sensor is level and stable.

3. Wiring to the Controller:

The sensor comes with 25 feet (7.6 m) of UV-resistant extension wire. Connect the two wires from the rain sensor to the sensor terminals on your 24VAC irrigation controller. Refer to your irrigation controller's manual for specific wiring instructions, as connections may vary. Typically, rain sensors are wired in series with the common wire or directly to dedicated sensor terminals.

Important: Always disconnect power to the irrigation controller before performing any wiring to prevent electrical shock.

Operating Instructions

The Rain Bird RSD Rain Sensor features an adjustable rainfall sensitivity dial. This allows you to customize the amount of rain required before the sensor activates and suspends irrigation.

Adjusting Rainfall Sensitivity:

Locate the dial on the top of the rain sensor. This dial allows you to select rainfall thresholds from 1/8 inch to 3/4 inch. To adjust, simply twist the dial to your desired setting. A lower setting (e.g., 1/8 inch) will cause the sensor to activate with less rain, while a higher setting (e.g., 3/4 inch) requires more rain before activation.

Once the set amount of rain has accumulated, the sensor will interrupt the common wire to your irrigation controller, preventing scheduled watering cycles. The system will resume normal operation once the sensor's moisture-sensing discs dry out sufficiently.

Maintenance

The Rain Bird RSD Rain Sensor is designed for minimal maintenance. However, periodic checks can ensure its continued reliability.

  • Clear Debris: Periodically inspect the sensor for any leaves, dirt, or other debris that might accumulate on the top or around the moisture-sensing discs. Gently remove any obstructions.
  • Check Wiring: Ensure that the wiring connections to your irrigation controller remain secure and free from damage.
  • Verify Operation: After a rainfall, confirm that your irrigation system has been suspended. If it continues to water, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

Troubleshooting

If your Rain Bird RSD Rain Sensor is not functioning as expected, consider the following common issues and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Irrigation system waters during or after rain.
  • Sensor not receiving rain (obstructed).
  • Rainfall sensitivity set too high.
  • Wiring issue.
  • Sensor discs are dry.
  • Relocate sensor to an unobstructed area.
  • Adjust the dial to a lower rainfall setting.
  • Check wiring connections at both the sensor and the controller.
  • Ensure sensor discs are wet during testing.
Irrigation system does not resume after rain.
  • Sensor discs are still wet.
  • Debris on sensor preventing drying.
  • Wiring issue.
  • Allow more time for sensor to dry.
  • Clean any debris from the sensor.
  • Check wiring connections.
