3. Setup

  1. Secure the Chainsaw: Ensure your chainsaw is turned off, the chain brake is engaged, and the saw is securely clamped in a vise or other stable fixture. This prevents movement during sharpening.
  2. Identify Chain Type: Determine the correct file size for your chainsaw chain. The Oregon 31692 is designed for 4.5mm (or 11/64") chains. Consult your chainsaw's owner's manual or the chain packaging for specific requirements.
  3. Assemble the File Guide: Insert the round file into the file guide frame. Attach the wooden handle to the end of the file for comfortable and secure gripping.
  4. Mark a Starting Tooth: Use a marker to identify the first cutter tooth you will sharpen. This helps ensure all teeth are sharpened consistently.

4. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to sharpen your chainsaw chain using the Oregon 31692 Filing Guide:

  1. Position the File Guide: Place the file guide over the cutter tooth to be sharpened. The lines on the file guide's frame should align parallel to the chainsaw bar, ensuring the correct filing angle. The file guide is designed to hold the file at the correct depth.
  2. Filing Direction: Always file from the inside of the cutter to the outside. This prevents dulling the chrome plating on the outside of the cutter and prolongs file life.
  3. Apply Even Strokes: Use smooth, even strokes, pushing the file across the cutter. Apply pressure only on the forward stroke. Lift the file off the tooth on the return stroke.
  4. Count Strokes: Count the number of strokes required to sharpen the first tooth until it is sharp and free of damage. This number will serve as a baseline for all other teeth to ensure consistent length.
  5. Sharpen All Teeth: Move to the next cutter tooth and repeat the process, using the same number of strokes. Sharpen all cutter teeth on one side of the chain, then rotate the chainsaw or reposition yourself to sharpen the teeth on the opposite side.
  6. Check Depth Gauges (Rakers): After sharpening all cutter teeth, inspect the depth gauges (also known as rakers or drags). These control the depth of cut. If the depth gauges are too high, the chain will not cut efficiently. Use a flat file and a depth gauge tool (not included in this kit, but recommended for comprehensive sharpening) to lower them to the appropriate height.

5. Maintenance

  • Clean the File: After each use, clean the file with a wire brush to remove metal filings and debris. This maintains the file's cutting efficiency.
  • Store Properly: Store the file guide and file in a dry place to prevent rust. Keep them protected from damage.
  • Replace Worn Files: Replace the round file when it becomes dull or clogged, as a dull file will not sharpen effectively and can damage the chain.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Chain Not Cutting Efficiently:
    • Ensure all cutter teeth are sharpened to the same length and angle.
    • Check the depth gauges; if they are too high, the chain will not bite into the wood.
    • Verify the file size is correct for your chain.
  • File Not Removing Material:
    • The file may be dull and needs replacement.
    • Ensure you are applying sufficient pressure on the forward stroke.
    • Confirm the file is positioned correctly within the guide and on the tooth.
  • Uneven Sharpening:
    • Maintain consistent pressure and number of strokes for each tooth.
    • Ensure the file guide lines are parallel to the bar for correct angle.
