Heil Sound PR20

Heil Sound PR-20 PRO Series Dynamic Microphone User Manual

Model: PR20

Introduction

The Heil Sound PR-20 is a professional large diaphragm dynamic microphone designed for a wide range of audio applications. Its robust construction and specific acoustic properties make it suitable for capturing vocals, guitars, drums, and other instruments in live sound, studio, and broadcast environments. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your PR-20 microphone.

Product Features

  • Steel Body Construction: Ensures durability and longevity.
  • Dynamic Transducer: Utilizes a strong neodymium magnet assembly for high output and wide frequency response.
  • Wide Frequency Response: Captures sound accurately from 40 Hz to 18 kHz.
  • 600 Ohm Impedance: Standard impedance for professional audio equipment.
  • Output Level: -55dB at 1,000 Hz.
  • Unidirectional Polar Pattern: Provides excellent rejection of off-axis sound, minimizing feedback and isolating the sound source.
  • Included Accessories: Comes with a microphone, three interchangeable acoustically identical mesh screens (Silver, Black, Gold), an additional black acoustical foam windscreen, a padded carrying case, and a mic stand clip.

Setup

1. Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the PR-20 microphone and its accessories from the packaging. Inspect all components for any signs of damage. The package should include the microphone, three mesh screens (silver, black, gold), a foam windscreen, a padded carrying case, and a mic stand clip.

2. Attaching the Microphone Clip

Securely attach the provided microphone clip to a standard microphone stand. Ensure the clip is tightened sufficiently to hold the microphone firmly in place.

3. Connecting the XLR Cable

The PR-20 uses a standard 3-pin XLR connector. Connect one end of a balanced XLR cable to the microphone's output and the other end to an input on your mixer, audio interface, or amplifier. Ensure a secure connection to prevent signal loss or interference.

4. Selecting a Mesh Screen

The PR-20 includes three acoustically identical mesh screens (silver, black, gold). Choose the screen that best suits your aesthetic preference. To change the screen, gently unscrew the current screen and replace it with your desired option, ensuring it is securely fastened.

Operating the Microphone

1. Positioning

Due to its unidirectional (cardioid) polar pattern, the PR-20 is most sensitive to sounds directly in front of it and rejects sounds from the sides and rear. Position the microphone directly towards the sound source (e.g., vocalist, instrument amplifier) to achieve optimal sound capture and minimize unwanted background noise or feedback.

2. Gain Staging

Adjust the gain (input level) on your mixer or audio interface. Start with the gain low and gradually increase it until you achieve a strong signal without clipping (distortion). The PR-20 has a relatively high output for a dynamic microphone, so excessive gain may not be necessary.

3. Proximity Effect

Like most directional microphones, the PR-20 exhibits a proximity effect, which is an increase in bass response as the microphone is moved closer to the sound source. Utilize this effect creatively for vocalists or instruments to add warmth or fullness, or maintain a slight distance to achieve a more neutral frequency response.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Regularly wipe the microphone body with a soft, dry cloth. For the mesh screen, a soft brush can be used to remove debris. Avoid using liquid cleaners directly on the microphone.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the PR-20 in its padded carrying case to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Handling: While the PR-20 is built for durability, avoid dropping or subjecting it to harsh impacts, as this can affect its performance.
  • Screen Replacement: The mesh screens are interchangeable. If a screen becomes damaged or excessively dirty, it can be replaced with one of the included spares.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No Sound Output
  • Incorrect cable connection.
  • Low gain setting on mixer/interface.
  • Faulty XLR cable.
  • Microphone damage.
  • Ensure XLR cable is securely connected at both ends.

  • Gain setting too high.
  • Input overload on mixer/interface.
  • Decrease gain on mixer/interface.
  • Check input pad settings on your equipment.
Excessive Feedback
  • Microphone pointed towards speakers.
  • High gain setting.
  • Room acoustics.
  • Reposition microphone away from monitors/speakers.
  • Reduce gain.
  • Utilize EQ to cut problematic frequencies.
Hum or Buzz Noise
  • Ground loop issues.
  • Electrical interference.
