2. Components

The Lincoln 917 Grease Pump system typically includes the following components:

  • Pneumatic Air Operated Pump Head
  • Drum Cover
  • Roll-Around Base (Dolly)
  • Follower Plate
  • 7-foot High-Pressure Grease Hose
  • Control Valve (Grease Gun)

3. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps for initial assembly and setup of your Lincoln 917 Grease Pump:

  1. Assemble Roll-Around Base: Attach the casters to the roll-around base using the provided hardware. Ensure all nuts and bolts are securely tightened.
  2. Underside view of the roll-around base with casters attached.

  3. Prepare Grease Drum: Place a 120 lb. drum of NLGI 1 or 2 grease onto the assembled roll-around base.
  4. Install Follower Plate and Pump Head: Lower the follower plate into the grease drum. Then, insert the pump head assembly into the drum, ensuring the follower plate is properly seated and creating a seal with the grease. Secure the drum cover if applicable.
  5. Connect High-Pressure Hose: Attach one end of the 7-foot high-pressure grease hose to the outlet port on the pump head. Ensure a tight, leak-free connection.
  6. Attach Control Valve: Connect the control valve (grease gun) to the other end of the high-pressure hose.
  7. Connect Air Supply: Connect your air compressor line to the air inlet port on the pump head. A separate air line filter/regulator (e.g., Lincoln Industrial model 602136) is recommended to remove dirt and moisture from the air supply and regulate pressure.

4. Operating Instructions

Once the pump is set up, follow these steps for safe and effective operation:

  1. Regulate Air Pressure: Adjust the air pressure regulator (if installed) to the desired operating pressure. Refer to the pump's specifications for recommended pressure ranges.
  2. Prime the Pump (if necessary): If the pump is new or has run out of grease, it may need priming. This typically involves operating the control valve until a steady flow of grease is achieved, indicating that air has been purged from the system.
  3. Dispense Grease: Position the control valve nozzle onto the grease fitting of the component to be lubricated. Squeeze the trigger on the control valve to dispense grease. Release the trigger to stop the flow.
  4. A person using the Lincoln 917 grease pump to lubricate a vehicle wheel hub.

  5. Monitor Grease Level: Regularly check the grease level in the drum to avoid running the pump dry, which can introduce air into the system and require re-priming.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your grease pump:

  • Cleanliness: Keep the pump, hose, and control valve clean. Wipe off any excess grease after use to prevent contamination and buildup.
  • Air Supply: Ensure your air supply is clean and dry. Use an air line filter/regulator to prevent moisture and contaminants from entering the pump mechanism.
  • Hose and Connections: Periodically inspect the high-pressure hose for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage. Check all connections for leaks and tighten as necessary.
  • Follower Plate: Ensure the follower plate maintains a good seal with the grease to prevent air pockets and ensure consistent prime.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the pump in a clean, dry environment.

6. Troubleshooting

Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No grease flowNo air supply; low air pressure; empty grease drum; air in pump/hose; clogged nozzle/fittingCheck air supply/pressure; refill drum; prime pump; clear obstruction
Inconsistent grease flowAir in system; improper follower plate seal; incorrect grease viscosityPrime pump to remove air; ensure follower plate is seated correctly; use recommended NLGI 1 or 2 grease
Air leaksLoose connections; damaged O-rings/sealsTighten all connections; inspect and replace damaged seals
