Shure 565SD-LC

Shure 565SD-LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

The Shure 565SD-LC is a versatile, high-quality cardioid dynamic microphone designed for vocal and speech reproduction. Known as the predecessor to the legendary Shure SM58, this microphone has a rich history, including its use on the Woodstock stage. It is a popular choice for various applications, from live performances and studio recordings to public address systems in auditoriums, churches, convention halls, and schools.

The 565SD-LC features a robust construction with a durable wire-mesh spherical front grille, incorporating a highly effective wind and 'pop' filter. Its selectable dual-impedance operation and silent, lockable on/off switch provide flexibility and control for professional use.

2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the microphone and its accessories from the packaging. Inspect all components for any signs of damage. The package should include the Shure 565SD-LC microphone and a microphone clip.

2.2 Attaching the Microphone Clip

The included Shure A25D microphone clip allows for secure mounting of the microphone to a standard microphone stand. Thread the microphone clip onto the stand and then gently insert the microphone into the clip.

2.3 Connecting the Microphone

The 565SD-LC utilizes a 3-pin XLR connector for audio output. Connect a standard XLR cable (not included) from the microphone's output to your mixer, audio interface, or public address system's microphone input. Ensure a secure connection.

2.4 Impedance Selection

The 565SD-LC offers selectable dual-impedance operation. It is shipped connected for low-impedance operation, which is suitable for most modern audio equipment. Refer to your audio equipment's manual to determine the optimal impedance setting. Adjustments to impedance are typically made internally by a qualified technician if required.

3. Operation

3.1 Powering On/Off

The microphone features a silent magnetic reed on/off switch with a lock-on option. To turn the microphone on, slide the switch to the 'ON' position. To turn it off, slide the switch to the 'OFF' position. The lock-on option prevents accidental switching during performance or presentation.

3.2 Microphone Placement

The 565SD-LC has a cardioid (unidirectional) pickup pattern, meaning it is most sensitive to sounds coming from directly in front of it and rejects sounds from the sides and rear. For optimal vocal or speech reproduction, position the microphone directly in front of the sound source, typically 2 to 6 inches away. Experiment with distance to achieve the desired tone and to utilize the proximity effect (increased bass response when close to the microphone).

3.3 Wind and Pop Filter

The integrated wire-mesh spherical grille acts as a highly effective wind and 'pop' filter, reducing plosive sounds (like 'p' and 'b') and breath noises. For situations with extreme plosives or outdoor use, an external foam windscreen may be used for additional protection.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

To maintain the microphone's performance and appearance, regularly wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. For the grille, a soft brush can be used to gently remove any debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the finish and internal components.

4.2 Storage

When not in use, store the microphone in its included pouch or a protective case to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage. Avoid exposing the microphone to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight for extended periods.

5. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your Shure 565SD-LC microphone, consider the following:

  • No Sound Output:
    • Ensure the microphone's on/off switch is in the 'ON' position.
    • Verify that the XLR cable is securely connected at both the microphone and the audio equipment.
    • Check the input gain levels on your mixer or audio interface.
    • Test with a different XLR cable to rule out cable issues.
  • Poor Sound Quality (e.g., muffled, distorted):
    • Adjust microphone placement relative to the sound source.
    • Ensure the impedance setting is appropriate for your audio equipment.
    • Check for any damage to the microphone grille or capsule.
    • Reduce input gain if distortion is present.
  • Excessive Handling Noise:
    • Ensure the microphone is properly seated in the microphone clip.
    • Use a high-quality microphone stand that minimizes vibrations.
