Introduction

The MXR M80 Bass D.I.+ is a robust and versatile preamp pedal engineered to provide bass players with a wide array of tonal possibilities for both live performances and studio recording. It features independent clean and distortion channels, a 3-band EQ, a noise gate, and multiple output options, making it an essential tool for any bassist.

Setup

Before connecting the MXR Bass D.I.+, ensure all audio equipment is turned off to prevent damage. The pedal can be powered by a 9V battery or an external 9V DC power supply (not included).

Powering the Unit

• Battery: Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the pedal and connect a 9V battery.
• Power Supply: Connect a 9V DC power adapter (center negative) to the POWER jack on the side of the pedal.
• Phantom Power: The unit can also be powered via phantom power from a mixing console through the DIRECT OUTPUT (XLR) connection. Ensure the PHANTOM/GROUND switch is set appropriately.

Connections

• INPUT: Connect your bass guitar to this 1/4-inch jack.
• OUTPUT: Connect this 1/4-inch jack to your bass amplifier's input.
• DIRECT OUTPUT (XLR): Connect this XLR output to a mixing console or recording interface for a balanced, direct signal.
• PARALLEL OUTPUT: This 1/4-inch jack provides an unprocessed, buffered signal from your bass, useful for connecting to a tuner or a second amplifier.

Operating Controls

The MXR Bass D.I.+ features a comprehensive set of controls to shape your bass tone. Refer to Figure 3 for the layout of the controls.

Clean Channel Controls

• CLEAN VOLUME: Adjusts the overall output level of the clean channel.
• COLOR: Engages a preset EQ contour for a modern, scooped sound. This button illuminates when active.

Distortion Channel Controls

• VOLUME: Controls the output level of the distortion channel.
• BLEND: Mixes the distorted signal with the clean signal. Turn clockwise for more distortion, counter-clockwise for more clean tone.
• TRIGGER: Sets the threshold for the built-in noise gate. Higher settings require a stronger input signal to open the gate.
• GAIN: Adjusts the amount of distortion applied to the signal.

EQ Section

• BASS: Adjusts the low-frequency response.
• MID: Adjusts the mid-frequency response.
• TREBLE: Adjusts the high-frequency response.

Switches and Footswitches

• PHANTOM/GROUND: This switch controls the ground lift for the XLR output and enables phantom power operation. Set to 'Ground' to lift the ground and eliminate hum.
• GATE: Activates or deactivates the noise gate. The LED illuminates when the gate is active.
• EFFECT Footswitch: Toggles the entire effect (clean channel with EQ) on/off. The red LED indicates the effect is active.
• DISTORTION Footswitch: Engages or disengages the distortion channel. The red LED indicates distortion is active.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your MXR Bass D.I.+, follow these maintenance guidelines:

• Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
• Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
• Battery Replacement: If using battery power, replace the 9V battery when the pedal's performance degrades or the indicator LEDs dim. Disconnect the input cable when not in use to conserve battery life.
• Connections: Periodically check all cables and connections for wear and tear. Ensure jacks are free of dust and debris.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your MXR Bass D.I.+, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

• No Sound:
  • Check all cable connections (input, output, power).
  • Ensure the pedal is receiving power (check battery or power supply).
  • Verify that the EFFECT footswitch is engaged (red LED on).
  • Check the volume knobs on the pedal and your amplifier.
• Hum or Buzz:
  • Try engaging the PHANTOM/GROUND switch to lift the ground.
  • Ensure all power supplies are properly grounded and not interfering with other electronics.
  • Check for faulty cables.
• Distortion Not Engaging:
  • Ensure the DISTORTION footswitch is engaged (red LED on).
  • Adjust the GAIN knob to a higher setting.
• Signal Cutting Out (Noise Gate):
  • If the GATE is active, lower the TRIGGER knob setting.
