MXR® Distortion+ Instruction Manual

Model: M104 | Brand: MXR

1. Introduction

The MXR Distortion+ is a classic guitar effects pedal known for its distinctive distortion sounds. This compact unit is designed to deliver a range of tones from subtle overdrive to classic hard rock distortion. Its germanium-powered, soft-clipped distortion circuit has been a staple on countless recordings, offering a unique sonic character.

Key Features:

  • Germanium-powered, soft-clipped distortion
  • Classic 70s distortion
  • Classic early ’80s hard rock tone
  • Compact and durable design

2. Setup

Before connecting your MXR Distortion+ pedal, ensure your amplifier is turned off. This prevents any potential damage to your equipment.

Connections:

  1. Connect your guitar to the INPUT jack on the right side of the pedal using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  2. Connect the OUTPUT jack on the left side of the pedal to your amplifier's input using another 1/4-inch instrument cable.

Powering the Pedal:

The MXR Distortion+ can be powered by a 9V battery or an optional 9V DC power adapter (center negative).

  • Battery Installation: To install a 9V battery, remove the bottom plate of the pedal by unscrewing the four screws. Connect the battery to the clip and place it inside the enclosure before reattaching the bottom plate.
  • Power Adapter: Connect a 9V DC power adapter (not included) to the power jack on the side of the pedal.

  • OUTPUT: This knob controls the overall output volume of the effect. Turn clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease.
  • DISTORTION: This knob adjusts the amount of distortion applied to your signal. Turn clockwise for more distortion, counter-clockwise for less.
  • FOOTSWITCH: Toggles the effect on/off. The LED illuminates when the effect is active.

4. Operating

The MXR Distortion+ is straightforward to operate, allowing you to quickly dial in a variety of distorted tones.

  • Classic Blues Tones: Set the DISTORTION control low (e.g., 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock) and adjust the OUTPUT knob to drive the front end of your amplifier. This will produce a warm, overdriven blues tone.
  • Early '80s Hard Rock: Max out the DISTORTION knob (e.g., 3 o'clock to full clockwise) for a powerful, saturated hard rock tone. Adjust OUTPUT to match your desired volume.
  • Subtle Boost/Overdrive: For a cleaner boost with a touch of grit, set DISTORTION very low and OUTPUT to unity gain or slightly above.
