Key Features

The Samson C01 microphone boasts several features that contribute to its versatile and high-quality performance:

  • Cardioid Pickup Pattern: Provides excellent off-axis rejection, focusing on the sound source directly in front of the microphone and minimizing background noise.
  • Large, Dual-Layer 19mm Diaphragm: Captures detailed and accurate sound with a smooth, flat frequency response.
  • Heavy Gauge Mesh Grill: Ensures durability and protects the internal components.
  • Gold-Plated XLR Connector: Offers reliable and high-quality signal transfer.
  • LED Indicator: Illuminates to show when 48V phantom power is active.
  • Smooth, Flat Frequency Response: Delivers natural and uncolored audio reproduction.
  • Swivel Stand Mount Included: Allows for easy positioning and attachment to standard microphone stands.

Setup

Follow these steps to set up your Samson C01 microphone:

  1. Mounting: Attach the included swivel stand mount to a standard microphone stand. Securely fasten the C01 microphone into the swivel mount.
  2. Connection: Connect a standard XLR cable (not included) to the gold-plated XLR connector at the base of the C01 microphone.
  3. Audio Interface/Mixer: Connect the other end of the XLR cable to an input on your audio interface, mixer, or preamplifier. Ensure your device provides 48V phantom power, which is required for the C01 to operate. The LED on the microphone will illuminate when phantom power is supplied.
  4. Gain Staging: Before recording, adjust the input gain on your audio interface or mixer. Start with the gain low and gradually increase it while speaking or playing into the microphone until you achieve a healthy signal level without clipping (distortion).

Operating

The Samson C01 is a versatile microphone suitable for various recording scenarios:

  • Vocal Recording: For vocals, position the microphone 6-12 inches from the singer's mouth. Use a pop filter (not included) to reduce plosive sounds (P's and B's) and protect the diaphragm. The cardioid pattern helps isolate the vocal performance.
  • Acoustic Instruments: When recording acoustic guitars, violins, or other instruments, experiment with microphone placement to capture the desired tone. A common starting point is 6-12 inches from the soundhole or soundboard, angled slightly.
  • Drum Overheads: The C01 can be used as an overhead microphone for drum kits to capture the overall sound of the cymbals and drums. Position two C01s above the kit, spaced evenly, to achieve a balanced stereo image.
  • Room Miking: Due to its sensitive large diaphragm, the C01 can also be effective for capturing the natural ambiance of a room, adding depth to recordings.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Samson C01 microphone, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the microphone body. Avoid using liquid cleaners or solvents, as they can damage the finish or internal components.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the microphone in its original packaging or a protective case to shield it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Handling: Handle the microphone with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts, which can affect its delicate internal diaphragm.
  • Environmental Conditions: Keep the microphone away from extreme temperatures, high humidity, and direct sunlight.

If you encounter issues with your Samson C01 microphone, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
