Shure BETA 87A Supercardioid Condenser Vocal Microphone User Manual

Model: Beta87A

1. Introduction

The Shure BETA 87A is a high-quality supercardioid electret condenser vocal microphone designed for professional sound reinforcement, broadcasting, and studio recording. It delivers a smooth frequency response and high sound pressure level capability, making it suitable for demanding audio environments. This microphone requires phantom power for operation.

Key features include a controlled low-frequency roll-off to manage proximity effect, a characteristic presence rise for vocal clarity, and a tight supercardioid polar pattern for excellent isolation from other sound sources.

2. What's Included

  • Shure BETA 87A Microphone
  • A25D Microphone Clip
  • Zippered Carrying Bag

3. Setup

  1. Mounting the Microphone: Attach the A25D microphone clip to a standard microphone stand. Securely insert the BETA 87A into the clip.
  2. Connecting the Cable: Connect a balanced XLR cable to the microphone's output connector. Ensure the other end of the XLR cable is connected to a mixer or audio interface that provides 48V phantom power. The BETA 87A requires phantom power to operate.
  3. Activating Phantom Power: Turn on the 48V phantom power on your mixer or audio interface. The microphone will not function without it.

4. Operating Instructions

The BETA 87A is a supercardioid microphone, meaning it is most sensitive to sound coming from directly in front of it and rejects sound from the sides and rear. This pattern helps minimize feedback and isolate the desired sound source.

  • Microphone Placement: For optimal vocal performance, position the microphone directly in front of the sound source. Maintain a consistent distance to control the proximity effect (increased bass response when close to the microphone).
  • Handling Noise: The advanced cartridge shock-mount system reduces handling noise. However, avoid excessive handling or tapping the microphone during use.
  • Pop Filter: The built-in pop filter helps reduce plosive sounds (like 'p' and 'b') and breath noise.
  • Gain Setting: Adjust the input gain on your mixer or audio interface to achieve a strong signal without clipping (distortion).

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: To clean the microphone grille, unscrew it from the microphone body. Gently wash the grille with mild soap and water. Ensure it is completely dry before reattaching. Wipe the microphone body with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the microphone in its zippered carrying bag to protect it from dust and physical damage.
  • Environmental Conditions: Avoid exposing the microphone to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight for extended periods.

6. Troubleshooting

Distorted SoundInput gain too high; Microphone too close to sound source.Reduce input gain on mixer/interface. Increase distance from sound source if necessary.
Excessive Handling NoiseImproper handling technique.Hold the microphone firmly but avoid rubbing or tapping the body. Consider using a shock mount if not already.
