2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Placement

2.2 Connecting to a Television

Connect the DVD recorder to your television using one of the following methods. For optimal picture quality, use Component Video or S-Video connections.

• Component Video (Y, PB, PR): Connect the component video output jacks (green, blue, red) on the recorder to the corresponding input jacks on your TV. This provides the best analog picture quality.

2.5 Power Connection

After all audio/video connections are made, plug the AC power cord into a wall outlet.

2.6 Remote Control Battery Installation

Open the battery compartment on the back of the remote control. Insert two AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-). Close the compartment.

3.1 Disc Loading and Ejecting

• Press the OPEN/CLOSE button on the front panel or remote control to open the disc tray.
• Place a DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-Audio, CD-R/RW, or VCD disc onto the tray with the label side facing up.
• Press OPEN/CLOSE again to close the tray.

3.2 Recording Programs

The DMR-E65S supports recording onto DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs.

• Instant Recording: To begin recording immediately, insert a recordable disc and press the REC button on the remote or front panel. The unit will automatically find available space.
• Scheduled Recording: Use the on-screen menu to set up timed recordings. Select the input source, channel, date, start time, and end time.
• Recording Capacity: Up to 16 hours of recording is possible on a 9.4 GB double-sided DVD-RAM disc in EP (Extended Play) mode.

3.3 Playback Functions

• Standard Playback: Insert a disc, and playback will often begin automatically. If not, press the PLAY button.
• Supported Formats: The unit plays DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-Audio (2-channel), CD-R/RW, VCD, and MP3 audio files.
• Time Slip: While recording, you can simultaneously watch a program that has already been recorded on the same disc from an earlier point. Press PLAY during recording to activate.
• Chasing Playback: Begin watching a program from its start while it is still being recorded. This feature is available with DVD-RAM discs.
• Playlist Playback: Create custom playlists by rearranging scenes, skipping unwanted sections, or copying selections from recorded content on DVD-RAM discs. Access this feature through the on-screen menu.
• Direct Navigator: Easily locate previously recorded programs. A list of recording dates, times, channels, and user-entered titles is displayed on-screen for quick management.

3.4 Using the SD Card and PC Card Slots

The DMR-E65S features an SD memory card slot and a PC Card slot (requires adapter for CompactFlash and other memory cards) for viewing JPEG and TIFF images from digital cameras. Insert the card into the appropriate slot, and use the on-screen menu to browse and display your photos.

3.5 Transferring VHS Tapes

To archive your VHS tape collection, connect your VCR to the DVD recorder's input jacks (e.g., Composite A/V IN). Play the VHS tape on your VCR and simultaneously press the REC button on the DVD recorder to transfer the content to a DVD disc.
