Setup Instructions

Follow these steps for proper setup of your EHEIM Classic 2215 filter:

  1. Prepare Filter Media:
    • If using filter pads: Rinse all filter pads thoroughly under running water. Insert them into the filter canister as follows: 6 coarse blue filter pads at the bottom, 1 fine white filter pad, and 1 black carbon filter pad as the top layer. The carbon filter pad helps adsorb harmful substances initially and should be removed after approximately two weeks of operation.
    • If using filter media: Rinse all filter media under running water. Insert them into the filter canister in the following order from bottom to top: Eheim Mech, Coarse blue filter pad, Eheim Substrat Pro or Substrat, Fine white filter pad, and 1 black carbon filter pad as the top layer. The carbon filter pad should be removed after approximately two weeks.
  2. Assemble Pump Head: Put on the pump head, ensuring the O-ring is correctly fitted. Close all clips securely.
  3. Position the Filter: Place the filter underneath the aquarium. It is crucial that the filter unit is positioned below the water level of the aquarium for proper operation.
  4. Install Pipes and Hoses:
    • Fit the outlet pipe as per the provided drawing (refer to your physical manual for drawing 1 or 2).
    • Assemble the suction pipe and strainer. Attach them to the side of the aquarium using the two suction cups.
    • Connect the hoses to the filter: The suction side hose connects to the bottom intake nozzle, and the pressure side hose connects to the pump head.
    • Secure all hoses firmly with the clamping nuts.

Operating Instructions

To put your EHEIM Classic 2215 filter into operation, you need to prime it. There are three common methods:

  1. Using a Starter Bulb: If your setup includes a starter bulb, follow its specific instructions to prime the filter.
  2. Using the Universal Installation Kit: If you have a universal installation kit, utilize its priming mechanism.
  3. Manual Priming: By gently sucking on the hose connected to the pressure side (outlet). Connect the pressure side hose to the outlet elbow and the spray bar. As the filter fills with water, the pump can be switched on. A slight noise may be heard initially as trapped air is exhausted from the filter media. Once all bubbles have disappeared, fit the plug into the end of the spray bar.

Ensure the filter is completely filled with water before switching on the pump to prevent damage.

Maintenance and Servicing

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your filter. When cleaning or changing filter media, and the filter needs to be disconnected from the aquarium, observe the following critical points:

  1. Disconnect Power: Always pull out the mains plug before performing any maintenance.
  2. Disassembly: Release the locking piece on the pump head and carefully remove pump parts as per the drawing in your physical manual. Use a screwdriver to remove the cooling channel insert.
  3. Cleaning: Clean all parts thoroughly.
  4. Reassembly: Reassemble all components in the reverse order of disassembly.
  5. Reconnecting to Aquarium:
    • The filter must be empty of water when reconnecting to the aquarium.
    • The pressure hose to the spray bar must be drained of water, and its tap left open.
    • After all connections are securely made, the tap on the suction side can be opened. Water will then flow into the filter, expelling all air out of the spray bar, which eliminates airlock and ensures perfect priming.
  6. Hose Connections: All hose connections must be checked at regular intervals for correct fitting and to prevent leaks.
  7. Impeller Check: Ensure the impeller blades rotate freely on the impeller, and the impeller itself spins freely on the ceramic shaft. This is essential for the pump to start without trouble.

Troubleshooting

While specific troubleshooting steps are not detailed in the provided information, many common issues can be resolved by reviewing the setup and maintenance sections. Ensure all connections are secure, hoses are not kinked, and the filter is properly primed. If the pump does not start, verify the impeller is clean and rotates freely.
