Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Holley Electric Fuel Pump, Model 12-801-1. Designed for performance and reliability, this pump is a key component in your vehicle's fuel system. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and operation to ensure proper function and safety.
Safety Information
Always observe the following safety precautions:
- Ensure the vehicle's battery is disconnected before beginning any installation or maintenance.
- Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fuel vapors.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and gloves.
- Keep fire extinguishers readily available when working with fuel systems.
- Do not smoke or use open flames near fuel.
- Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific fuel system procedures.

Installation and Setup
Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your fuel pump. Follow these steps carefully:
- Mounting Location: Select a mounting location as close to the fuel tank as possible, below the fuel level, to ensure a gravity feed to the pump. The pump should be mounted securely using the provided bracket and hardware. Ensure the pump is mounted vertically with the motor at the top to prevent vapor lock.
- Fuel Line Connections:
- Install a 100-micron fuel filter between the fuel tank and the pump inlet. This protects the pump from large debris.
- Install a 40-micron fuel filter between the pump outlet and the carburetor/fuel log. This protects the carburetor from fine particles.
- Use appropriate fuel-resistant hoses and clamps for all connections. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks.

- Electrical Wiring:
- Connect the positive (+) terminal of the pump to a switched 12V power source, preferably through a relay triggered by the ignition.
- Connect the negative (-) terminal of the pump to a good chassis ground.
- Install an inline fuse (e.g., 10-amp) in the positive wire as close to the power source as possible to protect the circuit. The motor draws approximately 2 amps.
- Ensure all electrical connections are secure and insulated to prevent shorts.
- Priming the System: After installation, cycle the ignition key a few times (without starting the engine) to allow the pump to prime the fuel system and build pressure. Check for any leaks.
Operation
The Holley Electric Fuel Pump is designed for continuous operation once the engine is running. It maintains a maximum pressure of 7 psi, suitable for carbureted applications.

Figure 6: Performance curve illustrating the relationship between fuel flow (GPH) and fuel pressure (PSI) for the Holley Electric Fuel Pump. Note the decrease in flow as pressure increases.
The pump's rotor/vane design ensures consistent fuel delivery. For optimal performance, ensure your fuel system is free of air pockets and restrictions.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable operation of your fuel pump:
- Fuel Filter Replacement: Regularly inspect and replace both the 100-micron pre-pump filter and the 40-micron post-pump filter. Clogged filters can restrict fuel flow and put undue strain on the pump. Refer to your vehicle's maintenance schedule or replace every 12,000 miles (20,000 km) or annually, whichever comes first.
- Hose and Clamp Inspection: Periodically check all fuel hoses for cracks, hardening, or signs of leakage. Ensure all clamps are tight and secure.
- Electrical Connection Check: Verify that all electrical connections to the pump are clean, tight, and free of corrosion.
- Mounting Security: Confirm that the pump remains securely mounted and that mounting hardware is tight.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Pump not running | No power to pump; Blown fuse; Faulty wiring; Pump motor failure. | Check electrical connections and fuse. Test for 12V at pump terminals. Inspect wiring for damage. If power is present and wiring is good, pump may need replacement. |
| Low fuel pressure/flow | Clogged fuel filters; Restricted fuel line; Air leak in suction line; Low voltage to pump; Worn pump. | Replace fuel filters. Inspect fuel lines for kinks or damage. Check all connections for air leaks. Verify proper voltage supply. If all else fails, pump may be worn. |
| Excessive noise from pump | Air in fuel line (vapor lock); Restricted inlet; Loose mounting; Worn pump. | Ensure pump is gravity fed and below fuel level. Check pre-pump filter for clogging. Tighten mounting hardware. If noise persists, pump may be failing. |
| Fuel leaks | Loose hose clamps; Damaged fuel lines; Faulty fittings. | Tighten all hose clamps. Replace any damaged fuel lines or fittings. |
